Ha. I read that and pictured Majerus coaching a group of dearly departed grandmothers... and somehow getting them to 24-10 and the Second Round of the tournament! Which he could do.

Very sad. Like all people he had his flaws, but what a great coach, a colorful character, a larger-than-life personality. Darn shame he built SLU up to this point and could finish the job.

In the back of my mind I wonder if going back into coaching shortened his life. I'd like to know more about his particular health condition. He and his family were so quiet about it all.

Best wish to all, he was an excellent coach and surely will be missed. When he stepped down, thought it was serious, but did not anticipate this. My sympathies to all that knew him

Health condition? The man was obese = heart disease + diabetes, etc.................
He was one of the better coaches in the USA for decades and will be missed. God Bless Rick and his family

I guess what I would like to know is whether his situation was really that cut and dry. Would losing weight alone would have extended his life. If so, when did the point of no return occur. If so, why not something radical like stomach stapling.

Or did he have a family-related degenerative condition. His father apparently died of a heart attack at the age of 63. Perhaps knowing more about his story could illuminate health challenges that are more common than perhaps is understood.

Sad day for the game, St Louis, and for his family. The guy was not afraid to speak his mind and he did things the right way. RIP...

Steve, great video, never saw that one.

As a coach myself (high school level, soccer) I can totally understand the emotion for Rick and his kids there. You develop bonds with these kids and hope to help them succeed in life even more than on the field. He did his job above and beyond. World will miss a great coach, but even a better person. Hearts go out to family and friends....

I'm sure Conklin would like that one back and his buddies get on him about it, but it's pretty neat for a coach to have that kind of effect on another individual.

I was really impressed by his coaching the one time we played SLU. I'm sad to see the news.

I knew him from a long time ago. His residence was at an area hotel. He ordered out every meal and ate unhealthy foods to say the least. Nicest guy in the world. Would help anyone who would ask. His life was about basketball and after that it was still about basketball. Nothing else seemed to matter. How do you intervene on someone that is eating themselves to death? We all have to know of a person that was like Rick. Stomach stapling is one option. The other is is intensive counseling and therapy. Hell look at what those people on the Biggest Loser go through. Most have some deep routed emotional problems to fight through before they start losing and keeping it off.

I lost my father to heart disease at 48. Lost my mother to alcoholism. I am 56 now, weigh 175 , exercise daily with weights and can play basketball for hours. My heart will never be a problem - as the Dr performing the heart test told me. My father was like Rick, coached and cared about basketball and loved to eat - disregarded his health. I saw what my parents went through. I made a choice not to be like that.

Ricks story is worth pursuing for what you have mentioned above as many people can learn from his experience. He really was one of a kind.
