The City Game - Duquesne vs Pittsburgh
![]() December 5th, 2012 7:00 pm This is the 81st edition of the rivalry which started on Jan. 13, 1932 | Pitt leads series 49-31 and Duquesne has not won since 2000. Opening Line: Pittsburgh -15.5 Available on ESPN 3 / watchespn.com Official Website Promotional Video Duquesne Preview / Notes Pitt Preview / Notes Will Graves Associated Press Article Post-Gazette Preview Dejan's Column of crap Yuku Response Pitt Trib Preview Duquesne Trib Preview Inflammatory Article by Post-Gazette Columnist Gene Collier Yuku Duquesne Preview Sean Johnson Article This has been the game of the season for Duquesne for many years. Some fans will balk at this and say the game means less now than it used to. Others still claim the game is the make or break game of every season. One thing is for sure, this is the most watched Duquesne game every season and is the biggest chance for Duquesne to get more fans in Pittsburgh. Last year over 15,000 fans packed the Consol Energy Center. A win would be a game changer in the city's perception of Duquesne. This is probably the least likely Duquesne team to win, but in today's basketball landscape a win is always possible. Lets Go Dukes! Quote:

Re: The City Game - Duquesne vs Pittsburgh
According to several tweets from Pittsburgh news media, Pittsburgh Guard Trey Zeigler may be made available for the game after being suspended indefinitely for two misdemeanor charges related to DUI. Pitt coach Jamie Dixon is talking with university officials and has said Zeigler has been very remorseful.
Zeigler is a Central Michigan transfer and has averaged 16 min, 6.8 pts, 1.2 rebounds in 5 games. Pitt a little scared? Also, I posted this on the Duquesne board: This was from a blog entry by Pittsburgh Tribune sports columnist Dejan Kovacevic after the Ferry hiring: Quote:
Also, his article after the firing: Quote:
Donovan Jack has played 5 minutes in 5 possible games for Penn State. He has not scored a point. He has 1 rebound. Willie Moore has played 57 minutes in 5 possible games for Oregon. 16 total points, 4 total assists, 8 total turnovers. Khalil Johnson has played 8 minutes in 7 possible games for California. 5 total points. 2 rebounds. Now, this was supposed to be the greatest recruiting class in the A10. I mean it would have put Semaj Christon completely out of contention for rookie of the week awards. It would have blown away the rest of the conference. "What was Jim Ferry able to find working out of a dorm in towers for a few weeks? Derrick Colter has played 208 minutes in 7 possible games. 73 total points, 32 assists Quevyn Winters has played 171 minutes in 7 games, 76 points, 28 rebounds Jeremiah Jones has played 149 minutes in 7 games, 51 points, 24 rebounds, 6 assists Marvin Binney has played 65 minutes in 7 games, 12 points, 7 assists He also got a transfer from UAB in Ovie Soko, who should start next season. I wonder when Dejan and Robinson will admit their mistake. Major props to Amodio and Dougherty so far in identifying and choosing Jim Ferry. So far so good.

With all due respect, I indeed balk at this - The only thing that matters is winning the A10 which I hope we can do some year very soon. One of the first questions asked of Coach Ferry at a session held in the summer for fans was "can you beat Pitt". Please...that's what we want to know? How about "can you get Duquesne ranked in the top 10 in the country" like it was at one time somewhere around 1970. Win the A10, get ranked in the top 25, go to the NCAA and compete - that's what makes a difference now. I refer you to a quote from the inimitable Scott Edgar who said he was asked during his interview if he could beat Pitt and he said yes. This quote came after he did indeed beat Pitt and, of course, later after a few years he was fired. Because that was all he could do was beat Pitt. All that being said above, I do too. |

Re: The City Game - Duquesne vs Pittsburgh
I acknowledge the folks who do not think this game is all that important and understand that sentiment.
I point to the large numbers of Duquesne students who wear Pitt clothes, are Pitt basketball fans, go to Pitt games but not Duquesne games, and laugh at or do not even know Duquesne plays Divison I basketball. When it has been 12 years since you have beaten your cross town "rival" and your "rival" has sucked all of your fans away to their arena it becomes important in my opinion. Duquesne will never be in a supposed super basketball conference if they can not deliver a large portion of the Pittsburgh market. Winning this game will bring fans back to other Duquesne games, especially students. That gives the program more money to continue to develop the program and keep playing at Consol. Winning this game once does not do all that. It is still just one game. But it is by far the most publicized and important game on Duquesne's schedule every year. In a year when winning the A10 is very unlikely, this game is even more important. There will be a huge number of people in Pittsburgh that see the result of this game and not notice the Dukes again all year. We need those people to become engaged. Mark my words, Duquesne will not make the NCAA tourney until they beat Pitt.

Re: The City Game - Duquesne vs Pittsburgh
Thanks RF1, thats a cool list. I like the breakdown by location. I think its time to christen Consol and send the panthers back to panther hollow in oakland where they belong.

Re: The City Game - Duquesne vs Pittsburgh
Alright. That makes sense. I guess winning the city back by beating Pitt is way too oversimplified.

Re: The City Game - Duquesne vs Pittsburgh
I think Duquesne has a chance if a few things happen:
1) Duquesne effectively uses the zone (which Pitt has trouble with) and Abele clogs up the middle for a good amount of time. Both he and 'Dre need to stay out of foul trouble. Andre also needs to block some shots and not get beat like he did against Fraser of Maine on Saturday. 2) Talib Zanna gets in foul trouble 3) Quevyn Winters counters the zone by hanging out in the high post distributing when he gets the ball or making a quick shot. That quick release he has plus his athleticism is a zone killer. Duquesne has not been able to solve Pitt's zone in years. 4) Duquesne doesn't make ill advised shots way too early in the shot clock. The freshmen will likely be playing in front of more people than they have ever played in front of. It could get ugly if they break under the pressure. They will have 1 to 2 thousand Duquesne students there alone. Consol could be a pressure cooker for the new guys, even Ferry. 5) The Dukes rebound on both ends of the court. They will need their best rebounding performance yet to have a chance. In last year's game the Dukes had one offensive rebound at the half and got outboarded, 39-15, in the game.

Re: The City Game - Duquesne vs Pittsburgh
Obviously, an intra-city rivalry is a rather unique opportunity for any program. It truly is special. The Philly schools make that even more unique, but when you only have two schools going at it, there is a premium on that one game a year, with bragging rights on the line.
The following really struck me: "Pitt leads series 49-31 and Duquesne has not won since 2000." So, in 2000, the series stood at 38 - 31. I remember the Duquesne's that involved Norm Nixon. I remember the Duquesne that was a national player, or at least a program that was mentioned when the NCAA Tournament rolled around. This may be only one game, but it is something to sell to recruits. Not every program can sell a game like this to their recruits. All I can offer is GOOD LUCK. It's time to arrest the slide and get back to where you once were. The potential is there, because the performance was once there. |

Re: The City Game - Duquesne vs Pittsburgh
Mini Documentary on Sean Johnson Preparing for his last home opener. If you have never been to Duquesne's campus this should give you a pretty idea on why its such a special place. Great job Duquesne for making this. Great promotional value too. Sean is a great ambassador for Duquesne.
