Off Topic - vacation
Now that winter, or what passes for winter here, has maybe finally arrived, it is time to begin looking around for a summer vacation destination. I hope some of you might be able to help.
Going at the end of July, so what I am looking for must provide relief from our oppressive summers here in Texas. I was looking at two prospective areas because Southwest Airlines has good inexpensive air service to both locations from here. I am considering Rhode Island and upstate New York, around the Thousand Islands. Can anyone give me some advice and referrals? I was looking at spending a week there.

Re: Off Topic - vacation
Green Airport in RI pretty much covers the southeast portion of New England (Cape Cod, RI, and eastern CT). Plenty of coastal options there. Compared to Texas, it is a very compact area with a lot of VARIED options within a short 1-2 hour drive. You always have the beaches/coast and many day trip destinations such as Mystic, Block Island, Newport, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket, and Boston.

rusty, I've never been to the Thousand Islands, but another option in Upstate NY is Lake Placid in the Adirondacks. It's beautiful there in the Summer. Great town, Olympic venues to visit, shopping, restaurants, Whiteface, hiking if your into that, and of course, Lake Placid itself, and Mirror Lake.

Lots of day hikes in the area, less extreme altitude than out west, but still usually with nice views. |

Re: Off Topic - vacation
1) Fly into Albany rent a car and go spend a week/weekend in the Adirondack state park in upstate New York. Visit Lake Placid, etc.
2) If your more of a beach person, fly into Providence, rent a car, and drive out to Cape Cod in MA. Southwest flies into both airports and the drive will be about relatively the same from each location. |

Re: Off Topic - vacation
![]() I find the Cape to be over crowded. South County in Rhode Island is blissfully less crowded, beautiful and just so very relaxed. I have a house down on the Westerly RI shore, and could not be happier with the local. There are numerous opportunities for renting for a week, or lovely hotels to stay in, from basic to 5 star. Yankee Magazine did a spread last year on the beaches of South County. http://www.yankeemagazine.com/issues...outh-county-ri Newport is less than 30 minutes from much of South County, and there are ferries and short flights out to Block Island as well. |

Just have to know when to drive onto the cape and stay past the elbow where there are less crowds.

But not TOO far past the elbow. Went to P-Town for lobster when we were staying in Cape Cod last summer. It ain't exactly suitable for young kids ...or you better be prepared to answer some interesting questions.

Nice pic of Napatree Point. South County generally costs less than Cape Cod and is less crowded. Also very laid back and not as pretentious. |

Re: Off Topic - vacation
Those beaches make out OK in the hurricane? I was at work in Groton,CT the other day and a co-worker had a "Restore Misquamicut" sweatshirt on? Apparently took quite a beating in the storm.

RI has dealt with hurricanes in the past (1938, 1954-Carol, 1960-Donna, 1976-Belle, 1988-Gloria, 1991-Bob, 2011-Irene, 2012-Sandy). Things should be fully back to normal by the time summer rolls around. Last edited by RF1; 12-12-2012 at 02:09 PM. |
