Re: A10 Presidents call meeting
Unity is a pipe dream.
Our conference exists because we have 14 schools who's commitment is to be members of the best non-FBS basketball conference. (Temple and Charlotte changed their mindset to include football, UMass is doing so as well). All will be 100% loyal to that conference. That's the Atlantic 10 right now, but it might not be the best non-FBS conference for much longer. The politically correct comments from Xavier is nothing more than re-iterating that fact. When the new conference forms, every A-10 member will still be committed to being in the best non-FBS conference that will have them; Just like they were when they said yes to the Atlantic 10 in the first place. |

Re: A10 Presidents call meeting
The A10 Presidents could create a new A10 that looks like the old A10.
Temple (Needs to back out of that BE deal) VCU Duquesne Rhode Island St Joseph's UMass La Salle St Bonaventure George Washington Fordham 10 Teams in the A10 again, State schools can relate, Small Catholic schools get to hang out together, GW and Fordham can engage on a highly intellectual level, no more annoying Dayton and Xavier fans. Xavier, Dayton, and St Louis get to join their dream conference with the BE7. Butler and Richmond also join (They can commiserate when the Catholics become too much). Everybody Happy? Re: A10 Presidents call meeting
It looks like everyone is forgetting that the strong basketball programs of the BE are no longer part of the BE save the resurrecting GT. Since the BE7 is noticeable weaker than what is now the strongest the A10 has ever been the only discussion for any A10 school to have is will the BE7 draw a larger TV contract? This is no doubt not lost on the A10 comish and no doubt has been negotiating a new deal hard. Every major win plays into the negotiation. If its all about money then the comish should consider a comp per team based on a formula of performance and attendance. The latter to encourage investment by strong team with weak facilities. In terms of pure basketball competition I cannot see why anyone leaves for BE7.

Re: A10 Presidents call meeting
Well there are a couple more variables besides that.. While the figure for the annual contract seems to be around $10 million... Going on the premise that Big East is losing 15%-20% of their $50 million per year projected annual contract with the Catholic BBall schools leaving. The money isn't going to be that crazy; however, it will split less schools.
HOWEVER, even larger is the NCAA Tourney Units that are the serious money. It has been mentioned by several Xavier and Dayton posters about this.. The units are where the big money is at for those schools... I would not be surprised that Bernie comes with some type of offer giving the schools a much larger portion of their units without sharing with others. Some conferences have done this before, this isn't a new concept (NCAA doesn't encourage it) and a very lucrative concept. Very attractive to successful schools like the Xaviers, etc because then they do not have to share with the schools that do not produce units like Fordham, La Salle, Duquesne (yes, La Salle fans, I recognize there are NIT Units but they do not pay anything worth merit). Remember NCAA Tournament pays your conference based on unit accumulation for 6 years rolling! A unit is approximately worth $250,000 per year for 6 years! Total values (not discounted) are $1.5 million for 1 game in the tournament, $3.0 million for 2 games in the tournament, $4.5 million for a Sweet Sixteen appearance, etc... You know the Catholic 7 will not offer this because DePaul, Providence, St Johns and Seton Hall need the cash (even though they do not contribute NCAA units either). You can make the argument that Nova won't be either in the near future (they didn't last year, won't be in the tourney this year either and their recruiting classes aren't really inspiring with the consistent Wright leaving rumors). Those schools need to pay for the Prudential Center, Well Fargo Arena, etc and those places aren't cheap. Bernie does have some options and she does seem very shrewd.. If it all about the money, this is one way to blow up the difference and then some... |

Re: A10 Presidents call meeting
Darn. I forgot about the ongoing nature of the NCAA credits.
So, X's 15 credits in the last 6 years are actually worth a whole lot more than I showed. That's a REALLY nice gift to the conference; like 15 @ $1,250,000.

Re: A10 Presidents call meeting
The NCAA units... does the NCAA pay out to each conference once every 6 years for the previous 6 years cumulatively... or is it on a rolling basis where annual payments are paid but for the NCAA units earned 6 years prior?

It is paid out on a rolling basis to the conference and distributed annually per my understanding. Any team leaving the A-10 will have to pay the exit penalty, give adequate advance notice, and forfeit any NCAA units it had accumulated. Xavier obviously would be leaving the most on the table. The Big East 7 are departing their league with no penalty from what I read because of a bylaw clause whereby a bloc can leave en masse. Since they are not dissolving the league from the looks of it, they don't have clear rights to the name and MAY be giving up departure fees (from WVU, Sry, Pitt, ND, RU) and NCAA units (GU, Marquette, and Villanova would have quite a bit of units). I would think that lawyers on both side of the split will be working overtime for the next few years to divide everything up. |

Re: A10 Presidents call meeting
Not sure, but my money is on Bobinski (X's athletic director) and maybe Butler already having agreements with the BE7 before the meeting.
I would not be suprised to see X make an announcement soon. That way exit fees could not be increased on them, etc. Is there a requirement for the number of seasons that an A10 must wait to exit after they announce? Maybe they would need to do it soon to meet up with the BE7 in 2015.

Re: A10 Presidents call meeting
Hang tough, A-10 presidents. And A-10 fans everywhere. We are better than they are. Replace Temple and Charlotte with Marquette and Creighton. Wish Ge**getown best of luck in the ACC. We can become what the Big East used to be.
