I don't know a thing about UD's president, but I hope for Dayton's sake he isn't as naive as this comment is. Volleyball and other non-revenue sports will not be a factor in determining what schools to invite to the league. Men's basketball, TV revenue and (which UD's president either doesn't realize or purposefully left out) NCAA credits revenue.

Dayton's last home game was played after the students left school for the Christmas break.

I agree with you for the most part. Nonetheless, I believe having a strong Olympic Sports presence can only help every candidate, and certainly a marginal, unaccomplished candidate like Dayton.

Having said that, Muddled's problem is that he continues to think through his muddled rose colored (vacuum) glasses. He doesn't consider the reality that other programs are as strong or stronger, or just as well positioned or better positioned than UD in their other sports.

Xavier just finished up its 7-digit golf facility at a private club in Cincinnati for M and W golf. The Men's team, in particular, is becoming stronger in the NCAA under Doug Steiner. Baseball and Men's Soccer, both playing in renovated venues on campus, are NCAA participants. Women's basketball is coming back to NCAA status under Amy Waugh. Women's Vball remains well positioned, though down from what it's been in the past. I think Men's tennis made it to the NCAAs this past season. These things happen when you have an administrator like Mike Bobinski at the helm.

At any rate, I imagine Creighton has better overall Olympic Sports than UD. SLU certainly can afford them, given that they were otherwise capable of putting up a $50mm+ venue for hoops.

I have no feel for how well Butler is positioned with its Olympic Sports, though I get the feeling that there is some stress there, given their desire to continue with football and the fact that they've been smalltime budget wise.

It doesn't matter in Xavier and Butler's cases anyway.

Long story short: UD isn't getting in because of its Olympic Sports programs and having good Olympic sports programs isn't a key differentiator for them.

UD doesn't get in if the number turns out to be 9. It is in a dogfight with Creighton and SLU if the number is 10. And it gets boxed out completely if the decision-makers throw the long ball to bring in Gonzaga, either at 10 or 12.

The more I read all of this, I'm thinking a few things.

1--SLU is on the outside looking in on this C7 league.
2--I'd personally rather see the Bills in the MWC than that other league.
3--I am hoping I'm wrong.

UD also has the China market, which could eventually provide more than a billion Chinese basketball fans to the Dayton Flyers' television market.

However, a lot of them do not yet have cable TV.

UD Opens Institute in China (Dayton Daily News - July 10, 2012)

The University of Dayton is expanding its reach to China with an August 8th opening of a new institute in “one of the fastest growing and most competitive” development zones in the world, officials said.

UD’s China Institute in the Suzhou Industrial Park — where a third of the world’s Fortune 500 companies have operations — will allow students and staff to collaborate with businesses on research and developing new technologies.

The university is calling the China Institute UDCI.

UDCI will likely become a recruiting tool for the university for both students in Dayton and students from China.

The grand opening will include the world-renowned Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Ohio’s former Governor Bob Taft, the University of Dayton’s Horn Quartet and a solo percussionist.

Curran, Suzhou Industrial Park officials, representatives from international companies, educators from Chinese universities and two Catholic bishops from the region will also participate.

College Hoops

In posts about conference realignments there often are references about the importance of NCAA credits vis a vis whether or not a school is a good candidate. The past is not prologue. They're lost when you change conferences. Because you earned them in the past doesn't mean you'll earn them in the immediate future. Not only do coaches and personnel change, but with a change in conference membership, so does the competition. Maybe you don't win the top two or three spots of the conference, or get that 22nd or 23rd win that gets you in. The NCAA credits are relevant to school(s) in making their business decision to leave one conference for another.
