VCU and Butler making their mark on the A10. At least for a season......

Temple at 10? Seems like an enormous overreaction.

Yeah I think we are around the 5th best team in the league. I don't know how they do their rankings though because if it's resume up to this point then we probably are closer to 10th.

Re: ESPN - 12/21 A10 power rankings
Surprised we are still #5 after getting embarrassed by Miami.
We need a three point threat to emerge before we belong that high. Right now all a talented team has to do is get a lead and crowd the inside and they will win. |

St. Joe's a little high after the Creighton embarrassment and the Villanova loss? They have a marquee win (Notre Dame), but that's about it. Temple does seem low, I'd put them in front of Richmond and probably Dayton. But until Wyatt and Randall show some consistency, I'm not sure I'd put them too much higher. It'll be interesting to see how Temple does against Syracuse and Kansas. I usually expect them to pull off at least one or two marquee wins OOC. |

Re: ESPN - 12/21 A10 power rankings
Ken Pomeroy's A10 "Power Rankings" (national ranking in parentheses):
1. VCU (10) 2. Butler (46) 3. St. Louis (52) 4. St. Joseph's (53) 5. La Salle (66) 6. Dayton (68) 7. St. Bonaventure (69) 8. Richmond (70) 9. Temple (74) 10. Xavier (87) 11. Charlotte (93) 12. UMass (96) 13. GWU (134) 14. URI (185) 15. Duquesne (187) 16. Fordham (234) 12 teams in the top 100 is pretty damn impressive. |

Re: ESPN - 12/21 A10 power rankings
This shows how Pomeroy weights margin of victory and the effect this has on the rankings. The Bonnies are 69th probably in large part due to their close losses and recent blowout wins despite a so-so schedule. Charlotte is much lower because they don't blowout lots of really weak opponents and got blown out by Miami (maybe they should be lower too). I bet Butler is 46th(!) in large part due to their close wins over good opponents and blowout loss to Xavier despite having the most impressive wins so far.
I agree this is impressive though, usually Pomeroy hates the A10, which I would say is primarily because we all play so many road games compared to higher ranked conferences. Having so many top 100 in Pomeroy illustrates what a tough year it will be in-conference. Note though that all but two are 50-100 range. |

Re: ESPN - 12/21 A10 power rankings
Even Ken Pomeroy would tell you that his "rankings" (they aren't rankings) are a problem until mid-January.
The reason is simple. At the beginning of the season 100% of the rating (ie adjustment factor) is derived from the preseason rankings. Those weights fall through the first month+ until sometime in mid-January the ratings become unbiased to the starting position. You have about 3 more weeks. The value of Pomeroy right now is in the raw numbers, the adjusted (aggregate ranking included obviously) still needs data. I think Pomeroy started Butler 8th |

Re: ESPN - 12/21 A10 power rankings
While it's disappointing to see Temple at #10 it's hard to argue with it at this point.
We have plenty of opportunities to prove our worth over the next 6 games. |
