A10 power rankings - 12/28/12

Seems about right. I would have St. Louis lower.

Quote:
4. Saint Louis.

The Billikens beat Loyola Marymount on Saturday; Kwamain Mitchell is still recovering from the broken foot he suffered in the first week of practice in October; and the last best nonconference opportunity for the Billikens comes Monday at home against New Mexico. Big game.

New Mexico 55, Cincinnati 54 (ESPN Recap - December 27, 2012)

CINCINNATI -- Sean Kilpatrick had two options: Take the quick shot if it's there, drive to the basket if it's not. He caught the pass and thought he had just enough room to get the shot off.

He never saw Alex Kirk's hand coming.

Kirk scored 15 points and blocked Kilpatrick's shot just before the buzzer Thursday night, preserving New Mexico's 55-54 win that handed No. 8 Cincinnati its first loss.

New Mexico (13-1) rallied in the second half behind its 7-foot center, who hit a 3-pointer, got a team-high seven rebounds and slapped away Kilpatrick's jumper in the final seconds. Kilpatrick passed it in from the baseline to center Cheikh Mbodj with 4.5 seconds left, then got the ball right back with the two options.

"I thought I had him," Kilpatrick said. "I could have drove, but I didn't."

Kirk figured that Cincinnati's top scorer was going to let it fly and managed to get there just as the ball left his hands.

"I knew if I went out, it would be pretty difficult for him to get a shot over me and Tony Snell," Kirk said. "I went out with my hands up and he was forced to take a tough shot. Luckily, I got my hand on it."

That's how Cincinnati's perfect record went away.

Cincinnati (12-1) moved up to No. 8 this week -- its highest ranking in nine years -- and was trying to go 13-0 for only sixth time in school history. The Bearcats couldn't salvage a tight game against a team known for knocking off top teams.

The Lobos have won six of their last seven games against ranked teams, leaving them 14-6 against the Top 25 during coach Steve Alford's six seasons. They beat Connecticut earlier this season.

Re: A10 power rankings - 12/28/12

I agree SLU is ranked high. But I guess I've thought that since the beginning of the season. Just need to come to terms with the fact that I'm a bit of a 'hater' when it comes to SLU.

I fully expect LaSalle to be in this title race. We debated before the season who has the best guard tandem in the league: its LaSalle, and its not very close. Galloway will score, Duren will do it all, and even Mills is as solid as they come. They are ready, IMO.

It is hard to tell whether the rankings are based on performance to this point or projected performance? If it is performance to date, how can Butler not be No. 1? I am still holding out hope that they will not prove as tough in A10 play as they currently appear, but its getting slimmer and slimmer. Coach Stephens has always been great in one-off games against big school competition, as he has been against Marquette, UNC, and Indiana. But, will the league spend more time focusing on their weaknesses? Butler lacks athleticism, and that will give them trouble against a lot of teams in the league. As great as their shooters are, as a UD fan, I feel confident in Dillard and Sanford against their guards.

VCU is the exact opposite. Depth and athleticism galore. I agree they are the favorite.

I refuse to accept what Brennan said about Xavier until their season is over. They always manage to come out roses. I expect them to be in the top half of the league, but hopefully that is it.

UMass will put it together for the conference season. Bank on that sh*t. They are my top candidate for the "make the rest of us look bad" award, by sucking in the nonconference then turning it on during conference play. SLU and SJU are nipping at their heels for this coveted award.

Yes, UMass is really dragging everyone down with all those bad losses. That RPI is an absolute anchor right now.

Fair enough, SpiderDave. I didn't know they were that high, so maybe they aren't the clubhouse leader for the award. But did you see how they are perceived by Eamon Brennan, national college basketball journalist?

Re: A10 power rankings - 12/28/12

I did. And from what I've seen, he's right - they can't shoot and are undisciplined on defense.

But I don't think their lack of style points is what damages the league and earns that award you are talking about. It's numbers that hurt. I think St Joe's has some bad losses and lower than expected RPI. And they could put it together and have a great A10 season.

SLU....same boat, and getting healthy. I'd say both teams are BETTER than UMass, and have more uneven OOC results, and are probably better equipped to light it up in conference play....making them far better candidates for that award you speak of.

The reports of Umass' demise have been exaggerated. Partly due to the fixation many here have on one crazy Umass fan's predictions. They've quietly held serve and won the games they were supposed to win, while not really clicking yet.

Re: A10 power rankings - 12/28/12

SpiderDave, as he often does, nails it WRT UMass. The Minutemen will knock off a top contender or two, but they're not a real title threat themselves. They are not even much fun to watch, all those nail biters are more aggravating than entertaining. If sloppy, dumb street ball is your thing, then this is the team for you.

The only game I've really enjoyed watching this season was Ohio...all the others gave me aneurysms.

Re: A10 power rankings - 12/28/12

It is hard to set these right now. It almost looks like a preseason warm up. Teams working out the kinks and trying to figure out rotations.... etc...

In general though, the only teams that look out of place ar LaSalle and St Louis, I would swap them. It will be interesting to see how this looks at the end of the conference schedule. I suspect very different.

You are right Bill, I think the word you are looking for is "enigma". Unfortunatley they will beat either Butler or VCU, then they will absolutely lay an egg against Rhody or GW - BOOK IT!

There is something inherently different from last year. They are preaching team and family and all that BS, but the play on the court is just not indicative of that mantra. I like you word sloppy and they also look uncomfortable. It is odd, they are trying to force the issue at the wrong times it seems. They will have a good defensive stop then rush down and whip up a three with no rebounders in sight about 3 seconds later, then when they have the opponent on the ropes they pull back from full court pressure....

All of the frenetic play that kept opponets off balance last year seems to be hurting them this year with the sloppy play you accurately refer to.

Re: A10 power rankings - 12/28/12

I'm sure Temple fans will agree, but getting out of the murder's row non conference schedule is going to be a nice, welcome change.

With luck, BU can finish off strong and string wins at Vandy and home to Gonzaga. That should put them right around Top 10 (#1 RPI?) something I thought was out the door when Hopkins got himself kicked out of school.

Getting down to the the 3 or even 2 line, if at all possible, would sure make another big run more likely.

Re: A10 power rankings - 12/28/12

Doubtful you're getting to a top 3 line TitleBU.

X has only gotten a top 3 seed line twice in its history. Since 1990, Temple has only been on a top 3 line once. It doesn't happen very often for A10 schools...

Re: A10 power rankings - 12/28/12

Doubtful? Meaning unlikely? Of course

But in the last few years, they've got a 4 and a 5 and given what's already in the rearview mirror, if things fall right, the resume would be better.

How often do A10 schools have a win vs the #1 team in the country?
