Conference Re-Alignment in A10
Hi Guys,
I'm kind of a lurker but very much enjoy the college basketball discussion on here. I think the passion that each member has for their school and the A10 league is great. Now on to my question. The details for the new Catholic 7 Conference are constantly changing with new rumors emerging, just about every day. The one thing that seems to be consistent among all of the reports is the desire for Xavier and Butler to join this new conference (from the sound of things it looks like both teams will). What impact (if any) would a deep run (National Runner Up, Final Four etc.) have on both these teams, as well as any other team from the A10 that might be poached to join the Catholic 7? I look forward to hearing everyone's opinions. Thanks |

Re: Conference Re-Alignment in A10
The C7, taking the top teams from the A10, will become the best non football conference in BB. Hope it's basically the mid west teams that we loss. The A10 will probably be like the 90's, replacing Temple with VCU and different teams rising and falling. If Dayton is left behind, our local paper suggests that we invite Cleavland St. Siena is mentioned as well and Davidson as a southern presence. The A10 will be an Atlantic seaboard conference, more compact with reasonable travel costs. Deep runs are possible and have to wait and see what happens. It sounds like summer 2014 for the C7.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment in A10
It all depends on who they take. If they just take Butler and Xavier, St. Louis would have a decision to make. There are other Midwestern teams that could be added (Cleveland St., Loyola, Detroit-Mercy), but are they close enough to keep SLU happy? Cleveland, and Detroit are both quite a distance from St. Louis. Loyola is having their best season in quite some time, so maybe they could be a decent addition. If St. Louis decides to leave, we likely would add Cleveland St., to give Dayton a partner, and stay at 12 teams. If the C7 go to 12, adding Dayton, SLU, and Creighton, I would be in favor of adding George Mason, and either Siena, or Cleveland St., for a 12 team league. Siena is within the footprint of the league, while CSU extends the footprint, but not by a distance that will create any hardship for the league. Neither school is a powerhouse, but both are generally competitive.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment in A10
Thanks for your responses guys. I'm not sure if I had made my question clear. I was wondering what the opinions of others on here were regarding the impact of Xavier and Butler (and any other A10 team in discussion to join the C7 for that matter) of having a deep tournament run would be? Say Butler or Xavier become runner ups, or make it to the final four this year. Do you think this would impact their decision to leave? Would they rather stay behind and pick members from the C7 to join the A10?

Re: Conference Re-Alignment in A10
Yeah, the only way a deep NCAA run becomes a factor for the C7 is if it's by Dayton, Saint Louis or VCU.
Anyone from the A-10 who's invited will leave. Period. (Xavier is as good as gone, plus at least one more, probably 2-3 more). |
