It won't be as hilarious when we have to play them down there. We enjoy a similar advantage at home and it'll be interesting to see how we approach a similar situation on the road.

Call it what you want but that's far from why Xavier loss the game. Xavier was 25-68 from and 3-12 from 3. Charlotte was 22-44 from 2 and 5-16 from 3. We even missed 14 free throws

Poor shooting and the lack of a strategy to find a 3rd scoring option is what loss them the game, blaming the refs for this game is just lazy analysis.

DB, I agree fully. We absolutely get away with a lot at home, but it is rare that we have a disparity like that. We most certainly get called for less fouls and typically shoot more free throws, but 29-9 is pretty tough!

Obviously fouls aren't the only reason Xavier lost,obviously Charlotte is good defensively, but to say it wasn't a factor is not true.

Xavier had 3 players foul out and 2 with 4 fouls. Charlotte had only 1 player with more than 2 fouls. That is one hell of a home court advantage.

6 point win with a 20ft difference and 12 foul difference isn't all just great defense.

However, congrats on the win and we'll see you in a few weeks.

Charlotte put the ball in the post almost every possession, that's why there was so much foul trouble for XU. There were certainly some questionable calls both ways last night. Thanks to the refs for helping Charlotte shoot 50% and holding XU to 36.8%.

Only in the A10 - Ref Lamar Simpson telling the Gola Arena announcer to tell everyone to clear the court after La Salle defeated Butler because Butler's coach was trying to claim that the clock wasn't operated properly and that they had to review it! The clock was operated fairly as everyone in the Arena could cleary see BUT it appeared the refs might try to give Butler a second chance at a game winner! I just want a conference that uses professional refs and not some discount car salesman they yank off the street.

I get it and my gripe isn't really with you. It's more with the journalism effort in the article. The refs didn't seem to be a problem last year in Cincy when they shot 28 FTs and we shot 13.




Halton should be rocking for the VCU game. If we beat UMass, we would be 11-0 at home going into the game.

This is quite possibly the dumbest of all your posts. You're arguing that if a coach questions that the game is over and requests an official clock review - well within his rights - and that the refs agree to review to clearly ascertain the correct outcome of events, that students should be allowed to stay on the court? Even though there is a chance - however slim - that the game might not be over?

XU bigs shot a lot of baby hooks, we played those straight up and didn't double much. You guys doubled everything in the post, hence more fouls.

Criston's layups don't count since we couldn't keep up with him and they were all wide open.

To argue that the refs were good last night, is...um....ridiculous. However, everybody's continued incredulity at the state of refereeing is amazing. Every team here has won games with "aid" (unintentional, of course) of referees. Every team has lost with the reverse problem. It's part of the game. People go on and on about the terrible state of referees. Is it about time, we simply recognize that basketball is nearly impossible to referee well? I have reffed high level high school basketball. There are nights people said I was spectacular and nights people have said I sucked (often on the same night). Regardless, the game moves so fast, and the angles are so tough, that the mistakes are made EVERY night. We all know this. As mad as I was during the game last night, it is what it is. Reffing major college basketball, is nearly impossible to do well. We see this night after night. It gets no one anywhere to argue about it.

Did it affect the game? Absolutely. Last year in Cincy, probably the same was true. But until the game is reffed by people watching replays and computers, what can possibly be done? It's tough to play on the road. X didn't do well enough to overcome whatever obstacles lay in their path and they came home with an L. Suck it up and move on.

I agree with you about this, it's tough to referee games and I certainly wouldn't expect a perfect game from anyone. There is such a clear disparity however in how games are called home and away that it affects how I enjoy the games. I think most Niner fans agreed that we got a better than usual homecourt advantage for us in the X game, though I don't think it was better than teams like Xavier, SLU, Dayton, etc. typically get at home. Not so much the foul disparity, which can look different depending on how teams are attacking the defense, but more what constitutes a foul and what doesn't. Xavier post guys started getting called for bodying up the Niners and touching their shooting hands in the 2nd half, which wasn't really called in the first half and also wasn't called as much against the Niners in either half as far as I could tell.

I will say that after watching games at other places, the homecourt advantage some teams get is ridiculous. Xavier's is pretty good, but not nearly as good as Duke, Wisconsin (saw games live here and root for them, but it's still pretty obvious to me), and Kansas. These programs don't exactly need the extra help, and yet they get it for almost every home game. This and other games suggest to me that the refs are consistently adjusting the way they call it to benefit the home team. Whether this is conscious or subconscious, it's something I'd like to see the powers-that-be address sometime. There seems to be an effort to ignore the obvious disparity, I guess to keep the home fans happier? Probably also makes it more likely that ref gets hired again in the future. I think basketball rules should be enforced as consistently as possible, no matter where the game is played. Road games are tough enough due to all the other issues.
