Re: 1/4 A-10 Games
SLU dominated defensively for the first 5 minutes of the game allowing 1 score in 9 trips going into the first TV timeout. They were up 12-2, and it was almost like they had the mindset that the game was over. At one point in the first half Crews needlessly went with the dreaded Barnett/Ellis/Loe frontcourt and naturally Savannah St clawed their way back into the game.
The refs were criminally bad. They might as well have been NBA refs for the lack of traveling violations and amount of on the ball contact that was allowed. Rashad Hassan (Savannah St's best player) picked up his 3rd foul in the first half on a Cody Ellis special that even that most partisan Billiken fans had to be shaking their head on. To make up for that injustice, the zebras decided to take Dwayne Evans out of the game with multiple phantom fouls in the 2nd half. Crews got a bit paranoid after Evans picked his 4th with 9:35 to play, and didn't put him back into the game until there was less than a minute left. With Evans out, the rebounding disparity became even more pronounced, and Savannah St dominated on the glass down the stretch as SLU struggled to get stops. The real story was SLU's getting completely psyched out on offense in response to Savannah St's various press, trap, and zone defensive looks. It was certainly a wake-up call ahead of the showdown with UMass on Thursday. The Billikens saving grace was their 80% FT shooting (26-31) on a night when they were getting fouled on every other possession and their 8 of 17 shooting from beyond the arc, including a ridiculous off balance falling sideways line drive by Cody Ellis that miraculously went in as the shot clock expired. Kwamain is looking better, but is still not where he needs to be. I just get the feeling that there's a crisis of leadership in that McCall and Jett are deferring to Kwamain to take over on offense, when at this point he's only 50-75% of his usual self. at the end of the day SLU avoided a disastrous loss against a tricky opponent, and have 5 days to figure it out before UMass comes to town. |
