Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
But whatever it is, and using my number of what they walk away from at a given point in time that is currently earned and owed, and what the proposed amount for new schools ($2.5 million/year), it would obviously take a few years to break even on the $12 million.

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
I may be coming around to this class distinction where seniority equals higher payouts. Perhaps the A-10 should look to immediately institute this policy since it appears that several of its new members have no problem with such a setup.

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
Someone from one of the Providence premium boards is spreading around the internet that tomorrow Butler, Xavier, Dayton, Creighton, and St Louis will join the conference with the television deal shortly thereafter

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
Question.
What is the incentive for them to go to 12 instead of 10? Is the thought that going to 12 was part of the verbal deal they made with Fox? Otherwise you would think they'd want to divide the money among less schools. |

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
Because 12 teams gives you more games for them to broadcast. If the rumors about Fox are true, they are desperate for content and the more games will help them out.

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
Those 5 seem to be the consensus, and have been all along. The only question is/was when the league goes to 12. Gonzaga could have been the gate crasher, but with no legit West Coast option to pair with them, their inclusion makes little sense. The east coast teams probably won't go for St Mary's, and no one wants to deal with BYU and their football situation.

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
12 teams give you significantly more inventory, inventory that can boost the payout/team. How many people are tuning into Depaul v Providence??? DePaul vs anyone??? The more solid to great teams you have, the more opportunities you have at great TV matchups.
10 teams makes 3-4+ NCAA bids a year more than likely the norm (someone has to lose), probably 6 teams at peak. 12 teams makes 4-5+ NCAA bids the norm, with 7 teams at peak. I'm no TV exec, so I'm just guessing at the things that make sense to me. If they start w/ 10, and UD is one of the 10, I still think they should go to 12. Of course, if they 12 and UD isn't one of the 12, they should stick with 9

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
I get the part that 12 means more volume, but am wondering (out loud in cyberspace) if that was a mandate by Fox or if it is the decision of the C7. If the decision of the C7 then it is almost an admission that overall they are weak and need more than just a few teams to make themselves strong. Without a doubt the 5 coming in are collectively stronger than the C7 in my opinion.

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
Keep in mind this is just one guy on the Providence premium board.
Most places still think its only going to be CU, XU, and BU. Thankfully we dont have to wait around much longer, this is getting bothersome |

Sure hope those "premium" Friar fans are wrong.

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
Good point. I think it would make more sense for the C7 to go 3 initially. You can always add more later, but getting rid is much harder if not impossible (as the A10 knows all too well).

Re: WTF $500 Milly to C7?
There probably was some internal discussion amongst the C7 about 9,10 or 12 teams well before they announced their plans to leave. The media consultants and I'm sure the non ESPN networks were pushing for 12 from the outset. Twelve represents more markets, more visability and press coverage, more hometown fans and probably impacts your competition a bit. Another consideration which doesn't seem to get much attention are the non basketball sports teams. A ten team conference that has teams that don't play a sport(s) cann be a nightmare from a schedule standpoint.

Quote:
At any rate, the presidents and AD's likely have relationships and a vision of what each of them want, and all 7 have to come to some sort of agreement. meanwhile, tv executives at various networks (or their consultants) have told them what each various package is worth in terms of TV dollars and potential NCAA tournament revenues. Balance that all out and you've got the answer to the puzzle. I doubt you'd ever see an admission from any part that too many of the CE7 are "weak" as they'll come to a conclusion and stand on solid ground together. |
