Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ VCU (Wednesday 1/9/13)

DB, they didn't call the game loosely for Traeveon Graham. He went to the line every time he made a move to the basket. I, like others, do not think Dayton lost the game because of the refs, but I do think it was part of the story (as it often is).

VCU will be a tough game for the entire league. The teams that could beat them are the ones who will slow the pace down, I think. Temple? SLU? Butler?

No excuses Dayton - please. When the head of excuse making is on vacation, excuses should take a hiatus as well.

VCU played what they were allowed to play - that is just good coaching and player recognition of the situation.

And every Dayton fan had said exactly that.

I don't think any UD fan would complain about the fouls called on UD. I think the consensus is that the final foul count could have read VCU - 30 UD - 20.

But really, I was coming on here to post that I have no beef with the refs. This VCU team reminds me a lot of the Cincinnati Bearcat teams of yore. The defensive players keep their hands on the ball handler the entire game. Thereby they dictate to the refs that the contact is allowable because the ref cannot call a foul every time it happens. The end result is a lot of borderline contact that leads to turnovers and steals. I have a ton of respect for VCU's defensive philosophy and clearly the players are well versed in borderline contact.

(On a side note, I did find it rather humorous that the VCU fans worked themselves into a frenzy a few times when Dillard would push off to create some space. In any other game, it would have been an offensive foul, but this game was a prison yard brawl. To the refs credit, they never called Dillard for pushing off.)

I'll go on record now: VCU is a Sweet Sixteen team and perhaps the most defensively stifling team I've ever witnessed in the A-10.

Yep sure enough.

For A10 fans unfamiliar with him he's hosts a show on ESPN950 AM, official home of the Richmond Spiders.

TheCobra, Treveon Graham was a big mismatch for you guys all night long. You didn't have anyone who could guard him and he's extremely physical on offense taking it at the bodies of his defenders. He forces refs to call fouls on his drives to the rim.

He's excellent at it and was one of the leaders in the country last year at drawing fouls per 40 minutes. He just couldn't knock them down well last year. He's much better from the FT line this year, to his credit.

So, when did this site change to allow moderators like Big E to log in as other users and change or post comments, as he did in my post earlier on this thread? WTF?

DB, you will get no argument here on Graham being a mismatch for us. He is a very good player and bigger than I thought he was going to be. There were just a few times, particularly on non-shooting fouls (but while you were in the bonus) where he got freebies out of situations where he would have had to make a great play to score. I also must acknowledge that I was watching a grainy computer screen and you were there live and in person .

I apologize for even mentioning the refs, DB and the rest of you VCU fans. They were not the story. It was a hard-fought game, and a well-earned win for the Rams. I like your team a lot and don't mean to take anything away from you. Here's hoping we can meet in the last game of the A10 season, too.

Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ VCU (Wednesday 1/9/13)

No it's fine man. If we had lost I'm sure our fans would be talking about the refs as well. We play a physical style and we heard a lot of similar things from opposing CAA fans in the past.

I really don't take offense, I just stick up for my team much like I'm sure you would if the roles were reversed.

Tre's a tough matchup at the 4 when we go small (which is often), he draws a lot of fouls and has a knack for putting the ball in the bucket. I'm sure he got some calls he wouldn't have gotten at UD Arena, but a lot of his production is because he's pretty good at what he does. He's playing at a first-team level right now.

Hey, I'm down for a rematch in the championship game. This year seems a bit odd since we all play each other once in conference play (except UR for us). Given how unfamiliar we are with most teams in this league, it feels almost like an extension of the OOC season for me.

He may be playing at league MVP level right now. Good luck the rest of the way, though I don't expect you to need it.

Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ VCU (Wednesday 1/9/13)

Kind words. This league is a beast, and I expect some road bumps along the way. This league is too good for us to not need a measure of good luck most nights.

The nice thing about Treveon is that he's just a sophomore. The same is true of Briante Weber. They're going to have some pretty special careers at VCU when it's all said and done. At least it looks that way at this point in their careers.

Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ VCU (Wednesday 1/9/13)

Are we now acting as if the poor officiating had nothing to with the outcome of the game?

Poor Dillard---I haven't seen a beatin' like that since somebody stuck a banana in my pants and turned a monkey loose.
What part of Virginia do this refs reside?

I too think VCU is very very good but how anyone can claim that the officiating had no part in the outcome is beyond me.
Are you kidding me?

VCU is physical.
Physical is one thing---the beating the refs allowed on Kevin Dillard was criminal.

It happens in basketball--but lets not pretend it had nothing to do with the outcome of the game...It WAS the game.
