Poor Dillard---I haven't seen a beatin' like that since somebody stuck a banana in my pants and turned a monkey loose.
What part of Virginia do this refs reside?

I too think VCU is very very good but how anyone can claim that the officiating had no part in the outcome is beyond me.
Are you kidding me?

VCU is physical.
Physical is one thing---the beating the refs allowed on Kevin Dillard was criminal.

It happens in basketball--but lets not pretend it had nothing to do
with the outcome of the game...It WAS the game.
You almost make it sound like VCU handed Dillard and Dayton its ass.

Welcome to VCU!

All kidding aside, that's the way we play. We're going to get calls at home, that's a given. I'm betting our style will result in more fouls being called on the road. I'm sure you experience the same advantage at UD Arena as many A-10 fans have shared that UD enjoys that advantage at their place. Those refs are A-10 refs, there's no conspiracy although I'm sure I'll hear more of that as the A-10 slate goes on.

Our crowds are raucous and influence the refs to a degree as well. It's a very hard place to win at as evidenced by our winning percentage there which includes several years where we didn't employ the full-court pressure system we now do.

I expect the road will be a lot tougher for VCU. It was in the CAA, and the A-10 is markedly better. Refs inevitably call tight games especially on the road if the home team is used to a more deliberate pace. It's just a psychological aspect of refereeing that is a reality.

Anyone who thinks they can run with us will be sorely disappointed. I can't tell you how much I've heard 'well you've never played against US' only to see us walk off the court the victor with the opposing team absolutely gassed.

If you want to beat us, you need to beat us down, grind the game out, and make it a slow, plodding half-court game. Running with VCU is not a recipe for success. Some of the CAA coaches had it figured out after seeing us a number of times, and I expect the A-10 will adapt as time progresses.

This year is almost a perfect storm for VCU as no one really quite understands the intensity and physicality of our press until they face it in person. It's not something that is as easy to pick up on tape or TV. Coaches in this league are very good and will make adjustments. They just won't be able to make many adjustments since we only play everyone once. That's something that favors us considerably this year.

Also, if you don't like our physicality, wait until you get a load of Butler. They don't play our style, but they are as or more physical than we are.

Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ VCU (Wednesday 1/9/13)

I never saw Kevin Dillard complain about any foul call or non-foul call. Even your coach rarely complained. I understand fans want the best for their team and I know VCU fouls more than they get called obviously. Your team and coach knew it was going to be a physical game and acted and played as such. I was impressed with your team's ability to maintain its composure for all but a few minutes of the second half. Many of the turnovers forced were do to pace and half the game coach Miller was pleading the guys to slow down. This is a key to VCU's defense, baiting you into a pace you aren't comfortable with. As noted by many of your fans a lot of turnovers were unforced. I was thoroughly impressed by your squad as were many VCU fans. You guys matched us athletically and speed wise at the front end of your rotation, our bench was more than likely the difference. Good luck against Butler and I look forward to many more battles with Dayton, maybe on that Sunday afternoon in March!

Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ VCU (Wednesday 1/9/13)

The teams that give us the most trouble are teams like Butler and St. Louis. They put you in the meat grinder and would love to beat you 52-46. We are much better now than we were our Final Four year at playing this style, but we certainly aren't comfortable. Fortunately for us, not too many teams play that style and many are baited into playing our pace defensively.

DB is spot on. Wait until you see Butler up close in personal. Grabbing, holding, pushing and bumping but mostly in the half court. They obviously have proved themselves doing this. All credit to coach Stevens and their team for it.

Welcome to the A10. As you will find, a lot of fans on here believe that their team would have won if the refs would have been fair.

Well done sir.
I think UD vs VCU could be one helleva rivalry.

I also think its strongly possible that VCU will grab that last spot in the new Big East.

But what really pisses me off is how nice the new guys are

Did you see the game?

Some games are determined by the style of the officiating. Thats fine.
Some night the refs are intimidated or just have a really poor night (like this game).

If you're trying to be a smart ass---you missed it by a mile.
I never complain about the refs.
This game was different.
And since bumping the hell out of the point guard is illegal-it is worth mentioning.

Again---did you see the game and if not why are you commenting?

People complain about the X/UD pissing matches yet here while we're having a discussion about our game an X fan for no apparent reason feels he must interject some smart ass comment.
And to top it off--its a moderator!

UD had 26 to's. Missed the front half of three one on one's and couldn't answer the bell down the stretch and lost by TWELVE. I thought they battled pretty good most of the game, but the better team won. Refs Smefs.

26 TO and half of those was the direct results of being clobbered or pushed.

VCU is much more physical and yet Dayton collected more fouls 21--to 20.
I never complain about the refs---its part of the game. Ive seen so many homer calls @ UD Arena over the years--..
That doesn't mean you cant talk about it when things like this happen.
It was one of those games.

Are we supposed to act like it didn't happen?

Shaka complained about a call and the next three plays VCU got a positve whistle. All three calls were questionable.
It was really a poor officiated game.

Its part of the game--just like any other element and when it happes--you got to talk about it. Tell it like it is.

Again I'll ask---did you see the game?

Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ VCU (Wednesday 1/9/13)

tman, we have all sorts of fans who would be seen as a-holes by opposing fans. They just don't post here. Haha

I think some UR fans on here who like to flame VCU also expected more trash-talking then we've put out, but that's not because our fan base is nice. We're just like any fan base that's been successful, lots of people cover their insecurities or boredom by being dicks. VCU isn't immune to that.

In time, I'm sure you will be exposed to that. Just don't paint all of us with a broad brush. Dayton fans get a bad rap on here but I've come to understand there are plenty of decent folks who just want to talk about basketball and root for the red and blue.

Commit 26 to's, bumps or no bumps, you usually ain't gonna win. The team you're playing tmrw had 5 to's against SJC, but I'm sure nobody bumped anybody the whole game.

I didn't watch a second of the game. I luckily do not live in Dayton so I do not get the awesome WHIO Channel 7.

I'm glad you took offense to my comment though. I actually wasn't talking about you or any Dayton fan in particular. I was talking about fans from every team in the league. I just happened to post it in this thread because I was responding to a VCU guy. Fans from every team in this league (and probably other leagues if I paid attention to their boards) complain about the refs. You can look at at least half of the game threads on here and there will be someone saying "the refs screwed us", "that game was ours except for the refs", "we were hosed".

So you didn't see the game.
You didn't know that the game was not produced by WHIO but rather a feed from VCU.

But you do know that every basketball fan across the country complains about the officiating but for some unknown reason you felt like perhaps the members here are too stupid to know that,,,, so you were willing to share your great wisdom with all of us in a game thread in which you didn't see or hear a moment of the game....???

Is that it?

OH,,,then never mind--I misunderstood....

(psssss...hey gang,,its me,,tman...,,don't ever think the x/ud pissing match that everyone here complains about,,,is all muddies doing)...

T-man going hard.

This was a tough one for us Flyer fans. Long conference season though. We won't be the only ones to lose in the "Stu" this year.
