I misunderstood you. I think UMass was the 8th best team in the conf last year and although they were 9-7, they went 1-4 vs. Duquesne, Dayton, and La salle. they will finish in the 5 to 8 range this year only if they win those matchups. To hear you smack La Salle and Dayton, after our recent success vs. Umass, confused me but thank you for clarifying your POV, I think we agree on the circumstances involving all of these teams. like I said, I didn't disagree with your assessment of La Salle as a 2nd tier A10 team. I guess, considering there are literally four tiers in the A10 not two, I should have received it as some kind of a compliment but coming from a umass fan it sounded like total snark.

Realize, if you only consider the A10 to be two-tiered, that La Salle has been upper half in the A10 for 4 out of the last 7 years, and this season they have more talent than in any of those prior winning seasons. I think there are 4 tiers in the A10:

1. VCU, Butler, Temple, and Xavier.
2. La Salle, Charlotte, Saint Louis, and UMass.
3. Dayton, Richmond, GW, St. Joe's.
4. Bonaventure, Rhode Island, Duquesne, Fordham.

Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ La Salle (Wednesday 1/16/13)

I thought Dayton did some things really well last night. They prevented our guards from driving off the high screens by doubling the ball handler and I generally thought they played good defense all night. They looked good on the boards, although the Explorers are a terrible rebounding team. The turnovers were a killer, but La Salle forces a lot against most teams. I have to think Dayton will bounce back and finish pretty strong, that wasn't a bad team we saw last night.

Dayton is athletic and well coached, but they should have shot the three more last night. When you're shooting 47 pct, that will keep you in some games. Instead, they took panicky shots down the stretch and didn't control the tempo of the game. I also saw players and a coach belittling the refs. The referees were a non factor in the result of this game, even though they did not call much of the contact on either team, if you look at when the fouls weren't called, it worked heavily in Dayton's favor as they were trying to keep La Salle off the line where they shot 88%.

La Salle's pep band was probably too loud. Good win Explorers.

When you have 50 to's ( many unforced) in your last 2 games, is there really anything else to concentrate on? That's 50 opportunities for the other team to score 0-3 points. Gotta take care of the ball. If they just reduced the to's by half, no 0-3 for sure.

I think the number of tiers and where you put each team is a fair assessment. The only question I have is what makes you think St. Louis is not in the top tier? They should be a NCAA Tournament team.

Regardless, it is going to be upsetting to see what happens with the whole C7. I'm hoping somehow Temple stays as I loved the rivalry that they had with UMass (years ago).

WTF - this thread has taken a weird turn and an XU/UD pissing match isn't even part of it?

Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ La Salle (Wednesday 1/16/13)

Dayton is +40 in rebounding after the first three A10 games of the season against VCU, Butler, and LaSalle. In most cases if you win the battle of the boards, you win the game. In nearly all cases, if you dominate the battle of the boards, you win the game. And UD is 0-3 in the league. Why?

They turn the ball over like Central Connecticut State playing Geno's UCONN team, and they don't defend two diddlies.

I like how we turn it over every way possible. We get stripped, we pass to the other team, we travel, we charge, we even mixed in a double dribble there if I didn't dream that.

I think it was too much palpable pressure.

Don't forget a moving screen here or there. It is truly amazing. Every starter had at least 3 turnovers yesterday, with Benson and Pierre having 5 each, and Sanford having 6.

Re: Game Thread: Dayton @ La Salle (Wednesday 1/16/13)

Pierre looks really good though. He is smart and always under control. He has a knack for scoring, but also had 6 assists last night. There were multiple plays where he drove and avoided a charge that most of our roster would have gotten. Pierre has been very impressive, and should be the featured player from here out.

I really hope Archie has the guts to bench Josh Benson after multiple poor games in a row. He thinks he can do things he cant do on offense, and he is terrible on defense.
