Re: Sporting News: Ban breakaway foul

While I don't think Derenbecker was trying to kill Clarke, calling the play a good, hard foul is positively clownish. From the under the basket angle, he clearly is pulling him down with his right arm while swiping down across Clarke's head with the left. It was a dangerous play any way you slice it even if his intent wasn't to make a 'dirty' play. It happens though. Personally, the Dayton fans booing the flagrant 1 call while Clarke was clearly hurt was more offensive to my Bulldog-slanted sensibilities.

With that said, Decourcey is a fool. I don't think any true fan of the game would like to see mandatory ejections for plays like this. The flagrant 2 designation exists for a reason. Stevens recommendation seems a lot more on point.

If this occured as has been described, as a Dayton fan, this upsets me as well. One can boo the foul call, but after a few seconds, realizing the player is down and potentially seriously hurt, one should come to their senses and be quiet.

Funny that you should call it out. I sort of knew it was used out of context, but never figured anyone would say anything.
