Re: Bobinski to Georgia Tech?
I would hope X can do better than Amodio. Met him a few times and he was very unfriendly. Also not impressed with what he has done at Duquesne to date.

Re: Bobinski to Georgia Tech?
Not sure if a dig at UD or if this comment is semi-serious. GTech is likely not in the financial position to fire Gregory. Their contract with Paul Hewitt was not a smart one, and they still owe him a fair amount of money. In fact, probably the reason he wasn't fired a few seasons earlier, was the contract situation. And the school isn't that flush with money to be paying 3 guys at the same time.
Still, Gregory might be on a short leash. |

Re: Bobinski to Georgia Tech?
Does Bobinski have any experience at a BCS school with football? Can't argue w/ his success at Xavier over the years, just find it courious that a BCS school would hire somebody w/o experience at a program with the beast that is BCS football. It wil certainly present him with a new challenge. I believe GTech is in the middle of a 2 year rebuild of their BBall arena. I know they had to play their home games off campus last season, I thought they were doing the same this season w/ the facilities to be completed next season, or perhaps the facilities are completed. Either way, I assume he'll have world class facilities to work with on the BBall side.
I'm not sure what shape their football facilities are in. I know the stadium is right in the middle of campus, not much room to expand/drastically improve it, though I'm not sure if that is needed or not. My bother in law is a Tech grad and you get the impression that BBall tickets are not in high demand. He says he and my sister have thought about getting them the past couple of seasons, but w/ 2 young kids it wasn't working out time wise. I didn't get the impression you better snatch up tickets any chance you get like Bobinski would be used to at X. anyhoo, good luck to him, I'm sure X will keep on trucking along. |

Re: Bobinski to Georgia Tech?
I just don't get why people think experience with FBS football is important. Bobinski has proven most successful at the one thing most important for a manager: hiring and supporting quality underlings. What is that all of you imagine is so complex about FBS football that Bobinski needs to know????

He's really got a very impressive resume. College athlete at Notre Dame. CPA, worked at Deloitte then Walt Disney Co. Moved his way up at Notre Dame, then Navy. AD at Akron, then AD at Xavier with tremendous success. Spent time leading the development and fundraising division at X. NCAA Basketball Committee chairman. Frankly I'm surprised it took him this long to get a BCS job.

Re: Bobinski to Georgia Tech?
Strange move for GT. Generally you don't see big schools (not saying GT is at the top, but they are a big school in a big conference) hire a guy with no extensive experience in football. Especially one who's had recent success as GT has had. The only bad thing about moving to a bigger school is that the leash is much shorter, in multiple sports. A lot of Tech fans have the delusional thought that they should be near the top of the ACC each year in basketball and the same with football (with the recent success). GT Basketball hasn't been anywhere since Hewitt had some success with them early on.

Re: Bobinski to Georgia Tech?
Why doesn't someone articulate exactly what it is about football that makes an AD's job so much more complicated? Do any of you know what an AD does during his workday? Wow me with your knowledge because, frankly, I think there's a lot of bullcrap going round.

Re: Bobinski to Georgia Tech?
It's about administrative skills and being able to spot talent. Bobinski has both in spades.
G Tech just finished remodeling their basketball arena. Their football stadium is at least adequate, though many G Tech fans would love to see a remodel for it. Their frustration is that they can't afford one right now. On the one hand, G Tech is a rather prestigious engineering school that just happens to be located in the largest city in the South. On the other hand, Georgia government is heavily populated by Dawgs alumni; GT doesn't get many special favors from the state house. Frankly, especially if G Tech ends up in the B1G, this will have proven to be a masterstroke move by Mike. Free rides in the Ramblin Wreck anytime he wants, and a hot dog at the Victory (they aren't that great, IMO, but they're right across I-75 from campus and have been famous for years). |

Re: Bobinski to Georgia Tech?
xudash - agree completely. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me precisely why the candidate needs experience with FBS football. Frankly, that assertion strikes me as one of the stupider things I've read on this forum. People seem to be making football some mythical sport that requires extra special skills for an AD to effectively manage. People just don't seem to be able to identify what those skills might be.

Re: Bobinski to Georgia Tech?
Serious question to X fans.. did Bobinski always have BCS/FB ambitions, or is it the potential uncertainty surrounding C7+n when compared to the relative "stability" in the ACC?
