Re: Game Thread: Xavier @ Charlotte (Wednesday 1/23/13)
Nope, in the A10 you aren't even allowed to jog down the court without being called for a charge when someone steps in your way 40 feet from the basket and 20 feet from the ball.

Well, if he's set, it's a charge. I don't think Henry even stepped in, he just stood there. I think they got that one right. There were some other calls you could complain about though, definitely had some homecooking in this game.

Tough game for X. I imagine Charlotte has made it look tough for about 15 other teams this year. |

I only watched the last couple minutes, so I can't speak to whether the refs were dishing out some home cooking, but even in that small sample, I could tell that they were completely incompetent. They looked like their past experience came exclusively from CYO games.

The refereeing was ugly in general though. Lots of inconsistency on what's a foul and what isn't. I'm sure the players were having a hard time figuring out how to play. For some reason, they decided to start calling minor contact down low after not calling much earlier in the game, so 3 of X's post players got into foul trouble and Braswell got 4 as well. Xavier was getting called for moving into the offensive player with their chest, but they hadn't really called that on either team earlier on. |

Re: Game Thread: Xavier @ Charlotte (Wednesday 1/23/13)
That is a good matchup for Charlotte. Despite a good game from Taylor, Charlotte has a big advantage inside, especially if the refs aren't whistle happy. Charlotte's guards are also bigger and stronger than X's. Still, Charlotte tried to give this game away - they were outrebounded (by 10 according to the sideline score), turned the ball over way too much, and OMFG the atrocities committed at the FT line (48% - left about 15 pts at the line).
Christon is a stud. Glad I got to see him in person. Crazy quick first step, explosive - just about everything you want in a slasher. If he gets any kind of reliable outside jumper he'll be unstopppable. We had one guy on our entire roster who could guard him (Mayfield). He gave Henry fits. Some of his drives were top 10 quality. Also tough game for Robinson. IIRC, 0 pts and 5 fouls. Seems like a high caliber guy to me, so I felt bad that he fouled out. Oh, and yes PH sold that foul. And I felt bad about #20 getting hurt when he and Evoc went for that ball late. Hope he's okay. Mayfield pulled up lame near the end. I think Christon ran his legs off. Gonna miss the battles with X after this year. |

Re: Game Thread: Xavier @ Charlotte (Wednesday 1/23/13)
Semaj was unbelievably good for stretches of the game today. I can't wait for the next couple years with him. Taylor played really well, like a senior should. Jeff disappeared again. Brad couldn't get a shot off for the first 30+ minutes.
Credit to Charlotte there... nice team. Next 2 @St Joes and at Cintas vs Dayton are very winnable. Hoping we can pull them both out.

Re: Game Thread: Xavier @ Charlotte (Wednesday 1/23/13)
2 for 15 from the floor and only 10 rebounds from Robinson, Philmore and Stenger combined. That's absolutely pathetic. Philmore is slow, can't shoot and unathletic and someone needed to remind Robinson there was actually a game going on.
Oh, and Charlotte shot 29 FT's and only had 15 fouls called while X only had the opportunity to shoot 9 FT's (although we only made 4 so doesn't even matter) and had 27 fouls called on X. The ref incompetence was never more clear when Justin Martin shot 2 free throws in a row than never even counted! Wow, I can't wait to be out of the A-10. No more Olean (with no de-icing trucks at the airport) and no more A-10 officiating.

Always enjoy my trips to Halton, and this will be the last unless we get you OOC.
Kudos on the win. You worked hard for it. Some of our deficencies were glaring tonight: short roster, soft inside, no mid-range game, etc. You also blanketed Redford and I was sorry to see us not try and work him free more, or in transition. Niners threes started to fall in second half; real difference in the end, we weren't guarding as closely as first half. Refereeing? 29 foul shots vs. 9 foul shots. We aren't winning that game at all, no matter how bad both of us shoot them. Just too big a disparity. The better offensive team won tonight. You shoot 50% and we shoot 37%...you're suppose to win. On to the next game.

Re: Game Thread: Xavier @ Charlotte (Wednesday 1/23/13)
Huge win for Charlotte, needed this as a bounce back from the Richmond debacle. Criston was phenomenal until we put Mayfield on him, Henry was guarding him too close far from the basket. Mayfield played off of him and tried to take away his dribble penetration.
Some odd whistles both ways in this one. Would love for us to continue the series with X. Charlotte 49er highlights from the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7753MABARjQ

Re: Game Thread: Xavier @ Charlotte (Wednesday 1/23/13)
Ugly game for X. All too often this year, we just can't get our offense going in the second half. Wolf was saying that Mack was pissed the entire 2nd half for the lack of execution - moreso than he's seen him in three years.
Kudos to Charlotte for a tough win - both teams played ugly, but they put some nice possessions together in the 17 to 12 minute marks and that was the difference in the game ultimately. Sure there were bad calls, but did anyone really expect anything else - frankly I thought Charlotte's players just did a better job adjusting to the different officiating style in the 2nd half. |
