For those calling for a Shaka technical the guy was getting hit by crap all night along with our FT shooters courtesy of the U of R crowd. They were warned over speaker about getting a technical about 3-4x and no action was taken. That was BS

Also, I was no longer mad when they stormed the court. I burst out laughing. They storm the court after beating a conference opponent and city rival. Hilarious.

The crowd was warned twice. The first time after a players was hit right after the whistle stopped play. The warning was that you would be arrested for throwing things on the court. The second was after the squishy ball bounced in the circle under the net and hit Shaka in the back during a dead ball. That warning was about a technical. Both times it was classless.

People around me complained all night about Shaka on the court. The only time I thought it was different than what most coaches do, was when three players were between him and the sideline during play.

And yes our students do storm the court when beating a ranked opponent at home, since it only happens 2 or 3 times a season.

Hell of a game last night. I'm not surprised at all that Richmond took over in OT. VCU had the game all but won and then a dumb foul by a senior and a 38 footer by Brothers took all of that away. All credit to UR for never quitting and busting big shot after big shot.

BTW, what was up with the refs. They were calling weak shixt on both teams all night. There were And-1 fouls given to both teams where the amount of contact was so small you couldn't even see it on a slo-mo replay. 48 total fouls, both teams in the bonus before the under 12 timeout in the second half. And no VCU did not lose because of the refs, UR took this game.

Wow. What a game. While this was already a good rivalry, it is about to get quickly ramped up. Both teams now in the same conference once again with most likely home and away games versus each other every season. I can only imagine what the return game at VCU will be like. College hoops is very much alive and well in the city of Richmond and only looks to get better.

...and remember - it IS a big rivalry, so stupid talk happens. All sorts of banter going back and forth for the week before the game, but now (since they lost) the theme on VCU message boards is that it is no big deal, and that the game means much more to UR then to VCU. It is the superbowl to UR, but just another game to VCU... and that the win will make Richmond's season. I guess you could call it a coping mechanism.

Truth is - the game means a lot to BOTH sides. It is a terrific city rivalry... with lots of bluster and blarney on both sides.

Schools are about 7 or 8 miles apart. It has great potential now that we are in the same conference.

There certainly is a lot of "coping" going on on the boards, but thats what happens on anyones board including UR. We have a ton of fans who jump ship after any loss let alone one to your intra-city rival. You guys snapped our winning streak and you woulda thought by some fans reaction that we got knocked out of the NCAA today, lol.

We also have a game against LaSalle, who just beat Butler, tomorrow night so we have to move forward. The game last night is what it is, sucks to lose but its over. I'm more concerned with what Ramon Galloway and Tyreek Duren will do tomorrow. We are looking to move to 5-1 in the A-10 and get our 17th win of the year. Should be a great game.

Like i said early, the credit goes to UR, it was a great comeback and win.

My take is that the students going onto the court is justified because of the miraculous way the Spiders came back in the last 35 seconds - 13 points, 3-3 FG, 5-5 FT - all after scoring only 4 points in the previous 10 minutes of play, and one of those shots being from 28 feet out to tie it. Miss any of those shots and VCU wins.

As for the refs, the simple fact is that they are human. They won't call fouls on every play and they will balance out the fouls with some make up calls, both ways. If they let VCU get away with all the clutching, bumping, riding of the guards with their press, then VCU will be successful. If the refs call it tighter, like last night, then there will be calls going against the other team too, it's just human nature. This is where VCU is successful, by being very deep on their bench. They'll take a game of attrition more times than not. It just so happened that the fouls that got made up against UR were mostly called on freshmen forwards (Taylor, Allen) so UR's guards were able to play big minutes. But if a couple touch fouls go on Anthony and Brothers early as make up calls, UR would have been in trouble.

Either way, I never thought that the refs made too many errors. UR threw up some wild shots looking for calls, VCU was a little overzealous on the road with their press.

I think you are dead on with the refs. I thought there were far too many fouls called considering that this wasn't exactly a slug fest. Honestly the only call I thought was truly horrible was the And-1 blocking call against Reddic where he was clearly outside the circle and pretty much got trucked by the UR player. The "clock malfunction" was questionable but that had nothing to do with the refs judgement.

The guards veering into VCU's guards was a great adjustment. I'm not sure VCU will play a better trio of guards the rest of the season.

Also, a point to what UR's guards did well last night - when breaking the press and getting a step ahead of a VCU guard with the dribble, both Anthony and Lindsay often veered their dribble into the VCU defender's path, who was still guarding them close from a half-step behind. By doing this it caused the VCU defender to often trip them, bump them or be unable to stop their forward momentum and foul them. Savvy play and it took advantage of VCU's aggressiveness. I imagine other coaches will want to emulate this tactic. Theus picked up back to back fouls in about 10 seconds at one point with this.

That was just a smart adjustment by the guards and Mooney. UR was initiating the contact and forcing the refs into making the calls. This happened over and over again in the first half, I think the second was called a bit looser.

VCU plays so aggressively and makes so much contact with ballhandlers with the press that teams should force the issue and make the refs call fouls.

The refs were the same way to start the Charlotte game. Calling everything tight, all calls on the defensive team. Both teams in that one had nine fouls in what the first eight minutes?

And as long as they are fouling Brothers & Anthony we are ok with a tightly called game.
