The comments Schmidt makes at the end of this article are interesting, saying that its Butler, Xavier, and Dayton leading the way for the C7. Is he really delusional enough to think that SBU has a chance at the C7?

I guess he could have said the A10 is the best conference, but it's hard to say that with a straight face. So it's probably better to just talk like you have a chance to be included (especially if asked about that specifically) rather than say something along the lines of "our program isn't good enough to be included".

Given some of the complaints I've seen from other Bonnies fans on here about Schmidt complaining about SBU and seemingly pining for better gigs, those fans would probably appreciate a little misguided optimism.

I'll add that the Bonnies currently are no worse than several of those C7 programs. Might even be better given the local fan support.

I'd take Saint Bonaventure over Seton Hall, Providence or Depaul -- Unfortunately, they'll always be overlooked because of their "market".

This is the local paper (Attleboro Sun-Chronicle) for where I live. The writer doesn't really have much understanding of college basketball beyond the prism of Providence College (which for some strange reason he needed to work into the piece). This was an obligatory article on local boy Schmidt (North Attleborough native that attended Bishop Feehan HS in Attleboro) who was back in the area to play Rhode Island. Don't give it much thought as it isn't deserving.

Unfortunately, Bona has done everything to try to make that not true. Or, more accurately, it has done nothing to encourage that it remain so.

There was a time when Bona dominated the winter sports headlines in Buffalo. The Sabres, and to a lesser extent the Braves, changed all of that. The years of decline in Bonaventure basketball starting in the early to mid-'80s didn't help. But more than anything Bona just stopped doing anything to market the program in Buffalo, save for an occasional get together with the local press once a year. And then when the FNC (nee Marine Midland Arena) was completed in 1998, the athletic administration nixed a proposed series of games to be played there and seriously p---ed off a number of people in the process. Other than showing up in the Koessler bandbox once every two years to play the Griffs, I can't think of the last time Bona played a game in Buffalo, though admittedly they also play every other year in Amherst and Lewiston, but still.

With all of that said, Bona still gets reasonably good coverage in Buffalo and is still capable of putting WNY eyeballs on sets against good opponents. It's just not the market for Bona that it could be and that's mostly the university's fault.

I read the article, and it seems it was the writer that was delusional in bringing it up. Schmidt seemed to be trying to give a polite answer. On the whole, a poorly constructed piece with seemingly random tangential thoughts like the reference to PC.

Um, no.. You can make a case for Depaul and Providence, but Seton Hall is and will always be a far better basketball program than St. Bonaventure. Seton Hall 9 tournament appearances and 1 final four, in comparison to Welders' 6 appearances and 1 final four. The Hall is just a little bit better of a program.

Not to mention, Nicholson is gone. There will never be another player of that caliber at Bona, and that's what they need to become a good program. Meanwhile, next year Seton Hall gets Aquille Carr. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll2UaDrWFRE With him they should be NCAA caliber every year. Sorry, but the Hall is a much better program than Bona for the C7, and you'd be nuts to take them over them.

Also, that whole "market" excuse is really just another advantage that they have over you, among other things.

res, we had an inexplicable meltdown at FNC against the Griffs in December 08 I think. I don't know. I just remember being there, being pissed off as hell, and promptly getting drunk.

Looking back at the decision making in the late 90's with regard to the Reilly Center seating (the blues in particular, and corporate sellout in general), handling of the Little 3/attempts at the Big 4, playing in Buffalo, etc. I hate to say this, but Dr. Diles made some real dumb moves as AD.

To answer jjjacks original question - I don't see where he said the Bonnies have a chance at the C7. I think you're reading too much into a simple quote.
