The call on Vinson was correct if you go by the letter of the law. He swung the elbow and contacted Mosley (I'll agree that it might have been embellished). You are allowed to raise your arms and pivot. If your arms do not move and your follow through gets somebody, then that is their fault and no foul on the player with the ball. Vinson did not do that though. He was stationary and swung the elbow. I am not sure about college but in High school it is a violation if you swing the elbow and then a flagrant if you contact someone. I bet in college that is different cause you have to let the big boys play. As I stated earlier, Ndoye did the same think last week and received the same call. Nobody, not even Bona fans had issue with it. Antboy, you are correct in that UMass should have adjusted their aggressiveness. They pushed off a lot on rebounds and reached in alot. When the refs are calling it then you have to take it down a notch. Its on the players to adjust to how the game is being officiated.

XU: Jeff, Spils and I enjoyed many drinks last night and joked about how we screwed UMass. We had a dry martini for every call. What a rough morning! Seriously, I am a high school ref and Jeff is a prominent member of our board. That is how he is a peer.

I apologize to all Bona fans/alums for forgetting the apostrophe. I was in a rush to finish the post so I could get back to work. GO BONA'S!

Bona was 32/33 from the line for 97%. Didn't see the game but the stat line is saying, that perhaps UMass should have backed off a little bit.

Ndoye didn't have the ball in the UR game, nor was he involved in the play that fouled him out, he was 10 feet from the end of the play and stuck out an elbow as a player who had already been fouled was going past him.

Something like twelve of those free throws (and SBU hit them all) came in the last minute when UMass was playing the foul game. The officiating was not nearly as one-sided as the free throw numbers suggest.

For my sake, I'm not a homer. I'm actually glad Bonnies won for my own team's sake.

But if you watch that replay, you clearly see that: 1) Mosley is chest to chest with Vinson when he may or may not have been hit, full body contact essentially. I don't see how you can argue that he didn't have his face right next to Vinson, though maybe he didn't at least have his face moving into Vinson's elbow; 2) Vinson's elbow is not even close to fully out, it's about as close to his body as it can get in order to move the ball past and over his head and shoulder while holding it (try it yourself), and 3) it's also not clear from the video that he actually made contact, particularly the view the refs seemed to use to finally decide to call it.

I don't think your view is unreasonable. But you have to at least agree that it's a close call, if not incorrect.

I caught some game with Bona in it over the last couple of weeks where the same call went against them. I am not referring to the Ndoy call that has already been brought up here. This was a situation where the Bona guy had the ball. In my mind, I see it being Mosely, but I'm not certain it was. Perhaps he learned from that how to get that call. In any event, from what I saw last night, he is pulling out all the stops and doing whatever he can to get wins. Bona is lucky to have him and the heart he is showing just when they need it to save their season.
