Re: 2/20 A-10 Games
Here are my observations from being courtside at the Reilly Center last evening:
1. Chaz Williams is fast on TV, but even faster in real life. I could barely keep track of him, but that might be the result of one too many pre-game beers. 2. Coach Derrick showed more athleticism prancing about the sidelines than some of his players did guarding Mosley. Some of them would have been better served just waving a red handkerchief and yelling "Ole" when he drove by them. Oh, and I'm pretty sure you can pick up a necktie in Olean for about 10 bucks, so it wouldn't have killed him to wear one, unless he was fearful of choking himself on it. 3. Donnie Eppley is a good IAABO Secretary, but a not very good game official. He looked scared and timid all night long, and late in the game, had to be counseled by the others during each time out. Jeff Anderson had a great game, and we went out drinking after the game to celebrate the home town victory. 4. My favorite welder of all time is Jennifer Beal, and not Jamil Terril. 5. To the credit of UMass, they have been to the tourney since Flashdance was released. |

Sorry, I didn't watch I don't have anything useful to say, but since SpiderDave isn't around to put me in my place, maybe I can get away with it. What's the official Olean position on the dirty martini? I love olives, but I'm unsure about this. 87, love to hear your position too. |

A martini is gin and vermouth and can be garnished by olives or a twist of lemon. I will accept a pearl onion, but that technically makes it a Gibson. Mine must have an olive(s). '87 and I agree on almost nothing, but I hope he backs me up on this one. |

Re: 2/20 A-10 Games
Okay, I suspected as much. So all I need to do is upgrade that cheap Martini and Rossi vermouth I've been using and I'm well on my way to being a civilized man. Or ... effeminate half man, or whatever that was you called me earlier.

Re: 2/20 A-10 Games
On refs, anyone remember Reggie Greenwood? He was at the GW game yesterday, I guess supervising the officials (he's been at a few this year). He had the Navy game open on his laptop and seemed to be watching that game instead of the GW-Fordham game.
I can't blame him, though, that was one ugly game. After a flat first couple of minutes, GW turned up the defense and the game was basically over.... except that GW couldn't make FTs. They shot 17-37, which kept Fordham in the game. GW had something like 17 steals, and even blocked two dunks (one when Gaston thought he had a breakaway and Patricio Garino ran him down and blocked it from behind. Sick.), and Kevin Larsen had a very nice game, including multiple spin moves and a soft touch off the glass. However, that dismal FT shooting from GW took what would have been an 15-20 point route, and turned it into something ugly. Not quite a close game, as I don't think Fordham was closer than 5 for most of the 2nd half, but not a beat-down either.

As for the game itself, I think it felt like a bigger lead than it was b/c of what you said, GW's horrendous free-throw shooting. At some point late in the game GW goes 1-2 from the line and it brought up their %; that's never good. It was one of those dangerous leads b/c it felt bigger. Fordham started the 2nd half down 4 and quickly went down 6. Cut it to 3 with 17:09 to go. Had it at 5 with 15:48, then GW started to pull away. Fordham cut it ot 6 with 8:22 to go, but then let it get away again with GW up 13 with 1:55 to go. Fordham cut it to 6 at the 1 minute mark though. Given the way GW was shooting free-throws, I would be surprised if many GW fans felt comfortable at that point. |

Re: 2/20 A-10 Games
I thought I had read a story here by some SBU fan that mentioned the crowd at an NCAA game jumping on the Bonnies Bandwagon (see what I did there?
) and the guy being impressed when some Dayton fans were chanting Let's Go Bona. I must have misread that and it was Bona's that they were chanting while the rest of the crowd was chanting Let's Go Bonnies. Thanks for the clarification. |

As for Fordham, I do like Leonard and Thomas. Nice looking freshman. Pecorino really needs an athletic legit pg though.

I still think the flagrant 5th foul on Vinson was a bad call. Vinson didn't have his elbows "out", they were just bent because he was raising the ball up to get it out of the way. When someone is reaching in to try to tie up the ball, the player has to raise it up higher to protect it, since he can no longer clear out with the elbows. You can't raise the ball above your head without your elbows coming out a little though, it's unavoidable. Mosley had his face close, so the elbow may or may not have grazed him, but even if it barely did, it was not flagrant. I also think Mosley probably acted a little bit to get the call. |
