Dan Hurley
Was curious to see if anyone thinks he is one and done at URI?
If Seton Hall or Rutgers come calling does he jump? I hope not, but was wondering what other ppl think. Hes gotta be thinking, if he stayed at Wagner one more yr, he would have a choice of alot of better jobs then URI. I was at the Temple, and St Joes game tonight. He looks like a beaten man, as does Bobby. They have never lost like this in their life.

Re: Dan Hurley
He knew URI was a rebuilding gig. I can't see him bouncing this quickly. I don't care if Mike Krzyzewski was coaching that URI team this year; they have a ton of work to do before they're a contender. I expect Hurley to right the ship.

Re: Dan Hurley
I agree...
But he didnt expect to be coaching this roster. He thought he would have Baron and Holton. Who would of been his best two players along with Munford. Which could of at least got him to Brooklyn, while his transfers sat out this year. He went to Seton Hall, coached at Rutgers...Have to wonder if one of the two may be his dream job. Back in Jersey.

Re: Dan Hurley
I could see him taking either of those jobs, but I only see Seton Hall possibly going after him. If Rutgers fires Rice, they will not go after an unproven coach to lead them into the B1G. I think Hurley will do well, but to date he has not really done that much. He has been a head basketball coach in college for 3 seasons and has had one winning year. His Wagner team did not even win the NEC regular seaons or tournament.

Re: Dan Hurley
I really hope you are wrong. I expect Hurley to stay and make URI one of the premier programs in the new A10. Personally, I was hoping to establish a Ferry v Hurley rivalry once both guys get their own players.

Re: Dan Hurley
I think he would take Seton Hall or Rutgers if they were offered, but I doubt either will be open this year, and even if they are he might not be a candidate just yet.

He's only been coaching for a few years. Very low level and now URI. He knew URI was going to take more than a year to get going, no matter who was there in terms of players. He wasn't just going to walk in and win big with them in this A10. How many postseason games has he won? Now he's gonna go and mix it with the big boys? That can be a big mistake. Take someone like Keno Davis. Had one good year at Drake early in his career, coach of the year. Went to PC and got eaten alive. You can go for big money right away but be careful what you wish for. Rutgers going to win in the Big10? Not right away. Seton Hall is still one of the "have nots" in the new BE. And they don't even have football money to throw around. Why not wait to see how things develop in those leagues before jumping into a new league? Look what's happened to the VCU coaches who left. And they left for big time football schools. Now look at what Shaka has done. Keep winning, get an extension. Then go for a job that's not dead-end. Same with Stevens, although he's gonna end up going from Horizon to A10 to BE in 3 years without actually moving schools. Matta and Miller have moved onto very big jobs. Arizona is almost too big to fail type stuff. If Miller had jumped off early to take a low level BCS job, would he end up at Arizona? Doubtful. (I realize X was already at a level above low BCS and URI is not, but the point stands of waiting rather than taking dead end BCS jobs if you really are hot young shit.) If the Hurley's can recruit and coach as well as some think they should have no trouble winning in the new A10. I expect VCU to move into flagship role but 2nd place should still be close to NCAA territory at least most years. Martelli looks to be past it and everyone else is pretty much newish younger coaches. Why not prove you can beat them first? If you do it right, with all the pedigree they have they could be looking at jobs way better than Rutgers and Seton Hall.

Re: Dan Hurley
Come on, people. Dan wants to prove that his system, his players work and WIN before entertaining the thought of another job. He should stay 5yrs at Rhody and see his first freshman class through to senior year and by then, sure, much better offers should be around for him.
Having listened/watched virtually every piece of media on him this season, he seems more at peace that this season is not one that would/could produce wins to look respectable. He is VERY aware of the huge turnaround set for next season, in just about every area of the program.

Re: Dan Hurley
Don't see him going to Seton Hall any time soon. Willard will do alright AFTER he rebuilds recruitment connections for Seton Hall.
This is based on going to the NIT Seton Hall game and asking them about recruiting and their previous coach apparently destroyed recruiting connection karma.

Re: Dan Hurley
I think the most likely A-10 coach to move on this year is not Dan Hurley. It is probably Dr John Giannini. He will have accomplihed the task of getting LaSalle to the NCAA and his marketability will be at an all time high.

Re: Dan Hurley
Someone else in the URI Athletics Dept could be gone before Hurley.
The Xavier board is reporting that URI AD Thorr Bjorn, the person that fired Baron and hired Hurley, is a finalist for their open AD position. If this were to happen, it would probably make the Hurleys feel uneasy. It would also be another blow to URI athletics. The raiding of the A-10 and its ultimate weakening along with losing an AD would be a lot to bear in such a short span. |

Re: Dan Hurley
I was one of those people who thought Hurley would only go to a school in the Philly to NYC area. As a state school Rutgers is under a budget crunch. They won't be receiving B1G money right away. Unless they feel they have a legal out from Rice's contract (he was suspended and fined earlier this season), I don't see them making a change for next season. If Rutgers flounders next season then a change is very possible going into the B1G. Willard at SHU is in a similar spot.He had a mess to clean-up from the previous coaching staff. He has improved the relationships with metro area high school and AAU coaches, but despite that has not been able to land any highly regarded recruits. Supposedly has one for next season Aquille Carr),but its highly questionable that he'll qualify academically. There are also rumors that a couple of players may transfer. Neither program seems to get a whole lot of support from alums and students. If Hurley's URI team shows improvement next year (I think it will), then he he certainly is a candidate at not only those two schools, but St. Johns as well if Lavin decides to leave.
