I would take this as a sign that SLU is definitely gone. Otherwise there's no reason to move this quickly on GMU. We don't need 13+ teams. Not unless we have an opportunity to pick up a VCU or Butler-quality hot commodity, which everyone would agree GMU simply isn't right now. This also puts us on the hook to find a 14th team to even things out. What's the rush? Even if SLU, Dayton and even UMass pulled a surprise and left immediately, the league would be fine with 9 members for a couple seasons. The Mountain West has 9 members. Now that the worst has happened and the Big East has split, the A10 will be essentially raid-proof once the Big East reaches 12. What if Wichita State and Florida Gulf Coast both make the Final Four? We might want those teams instead. Nobody is going to steal GMU or Siena from us if we don't move quickly. Wait a couple weeks at least.

re: 2016-17 George Mason Patriots

Every VCU fan is facepalming at the announcement of GMU to the A10. We finally get out of the conference with them.....

(They keep insisting there is some rivalry because they absolutely hate us but we couldn't careless about them. Their fans are already talking about renewing the rivalry. There was/is no rivalry. Their fans just hate us because we knocked them out in the CAA tourney every year.)

Also their president allowed Larranaga to leave and even acknowledged not giving a damn about athletics. How is that good for the A10? Their fans didn't even show up in Richmond for the CAA tourney this year. No students even came.

I agree about getting Wichita St though. We have history with them that would make for some good drama.

RR, have to think the VCU admin was among those pushing for a regional public school to be added, no?

I agree on not rushing. GMU is not the program they were several years ago. Slow down A10 and don't rush to add teams that were good five years ago. Just don't hit the panic button and add a team like Drexel, Siena or Northeastern next. It doesn't need to happen at this moment.

No we won't. Our administration was trying to sent themselves up for a potential conference move last I heard. Mainly due to the concern of the A10 falling apart. We wouldn't be lobbying for GMU. Not with the way they decided athletics wasn't important last year when the A10 offer came up. They let Larranaga go for a pathetic coach who won't cut it in the A10. Hell he can't cut it in a weak CAA. The GMU president doesn't even care about athletics. Why would VCU ever lobbying for a school that's not committed to athletics? Horrible decision by the A10. Every program here has been dedicated to its athletics. Yes, even U of R. No Moliva this move had nothing to do with VCU. This was all the commissioner.

Yep. Take some time on #14. Unlike some, I really like the addition of GMU. Good facility, proven ability to succeed, and a nice local rival for Yinka Dare's squad in DC.

Why would they move and why would the A-10 raid another conf like that? Oh, guess it's ok.

I believe they have a new president, so that may be a factor in the change in stance for them

As a SLU alum and season ticket holder this announcement does nothing for me. Yawn
The A-10 is sliding into irrelevance quickly especially here in the Midwest.
Like some have said, the only positive I would take from this announcement is that it is possibly a sign that SLU is out the door.

All the success was from Larranaga who they let go because basketball wasn't important enough to them. The GMU president even made it known athletics didn't matter to him. What has Mason done since then? Nada. Hewitt is a terrible coach and Mason won't pay up for a competent one. They had a final four coach and they wouldn't pay him. Also have you been in the Patriot Center. It ain't that great.

I've been to the Patriot Center. It's fine. Who are our other options here? Siena? Northeastern? Nah. GMU is a far better option. One bad hire doesn't doom an entire program. I like having another DC area school in the league. That's rich recruiting territory.

Doing nothing would have been my choice.
