The commish can't add teams. She doesn't have a vote. At least two-thirds (or is it 75%?) of the A10 presidents had to be convinced that this was a good move. I doubt they went over VCU's head on this. It's not like GMU is a Catholic school. The other public universities, UMass and URI, don't have any reason to aggressively support GMU's addition due to travel expense. Who does that leave who would say we definitely need to add GMU immediately, if VCU didn't? GW? Richmond? It doesn't add up. I'd be shocked if this happened without VCU's blessing. There aren't enough votes.

The new president is the one that said athletics don't matter. The old one thought everything of larranaga and basketball. (I know my bro attended there) Have you watched Mason games this year? No fans. The attendance was terrible. Like 3k if that in a 10,000 seat arena.

What schools would have gotten to vote is my question.

I can't see VCU being behind this. I know the VCU fans would be completely against this. We were glad to leave them behind. The "**** YOU VCU" chant from all of the Pat Center we got the last year in the CAA was really the final straw for VCU fans. Mason fans have this complete obsessed hate for VCU. VCU fans idea of Mason=meh whatever

Sounds like "Fordham South" to me....

Hewitt's base salary at Mason is approximately $670,000, which probably compares favorably to most A-10 conference coaches. Larranaga turned down a $1,000,000. salary from Mason before leaving for Miami. I live in Fairfax and have seen nothing to indicate that GMU is not committed to its basketball program. Heck, why even move conferences if they didn't care. Further, Mason outdrew most of the remaining A-10 teams this past season despite playing in a vastly inferior conference. I think the critics are being too harsh on GMU. I think they will make a sold addition.

+1

Who would GMU's critics suggest? Wichita State? They're in KANSAS! Not happening.

But that begs the question, who voted them in over VCU's objection? At least 7 A10 presidents had to approve GMU, and that's if Saint Louis and Dayton didn't get a vote and I'm right that it's only a two-thirds approval rather than three-fourths like in the CAA. If SLU/UD got a vote, it took at least 8 approvals. At 75%, it'd take 8 or 9 approvals, depending on SLU/UD's status. I can't see 7 A10 members cramming this down VCU's throat. If we subtract VCU and the 4 A10 members who aren't in bus range of GMU, we're already down to only 7 possible "yes" votes.

There is no way in hell that VCU voted down GMU despite what their fans might think or want.

Please ignore the rantings of this 12-year-old ... he's so freaked out at the thought of Shaka going to UCLA that he's lost the ability to make any sense whatsoever.

Here are the facts, then:
* Our AD cares so little about athletics that all he offered Larranaga was $1 million. Darn that cheap SOB. Miami offered $1.3 and Larranaga left. Obviously we wanted to keep him.
* Our most recent NCAA victory was 2011, so everybody acting as if we've done nothing since the FF hasn't been paying attention.
* It's somewhat understandable this Rowdy clown wants to forget that we had such a good team in 2011 -- we were ranked in the top 25 during the season and had the nation's longest winning streak at one point -- because without Mason and ODU both cracking the top-25 in RPI, VCU wouldn't have even had a resume worthy of sliding into a First Four game as a controversial at-large. Then their Final Four never would've happened.
* Our arena seats 10,000 and has had more than $25 million in upgrades since our Final Four. It's certainly no worse than VCU's glorified high school gym. Not sure why anyone would feel compelled to crticize it.

Bottom line: We're all thrilled to join a competitive basketball league, even if it means having to reunite with VCU. I hope you'll find our fans to be (mostly) decent people who enjoy good basketball.

re: 2016-17 George Mason Patriots

VCU's administration absolutely pushed for Mason's invite.

Suffice to say we have a large number of irrationally egotistical fans at VCU.

The vast majority who are against the move are just bitter that we can no longer hold the A-10 move over their heads anymore. It's petty and sad, but many sports fan bases are and VCU is no exception. I've seen shining examples from every school, but when you're doing well like VCU has, it just gets magnified.

I for one, am glad to have another regional public school in the A-10. GW, UR, VCU, and George Mason make for a very nice regional grouping. George Mason has been very respectable in basketball and the move to the A-10 should help them. That's probably what many VCU fans will never admit that they're afraid of. We have a lot of fans that need to get over themselves.

I say bring it on and welcome. If you're scared, get a dog.
