Siena drew an average of 6,361 this past season to the 14,500 seat Times Union Center in downtown Albany to see a horrible 8-24 team.

I don't see how Siena hurts St Bonaventure. Siena is a five hour drive and 300+ mile distance from SBU. There is no market overlap. Siena is far closer to UMass and no one is saying adding them would have any effect on UMass.

Most of BU's hoops games are played in 1,800 seat Case Gym which is a floor above the old hockey venue (Walter Brown Arena). The new Agganis Arena where all hockey games are played is beautiful but only occasionally hosts basketball (1-2 games per year if that). Agganis hold 7,200 for hoops but they get flies when they play there. If BU had anyhwere near the following or success that Sinea has had, I would be all for them being added to the a-10 given their school size and location in one of the nation's largest cities.

I think Siena would hurt Bona in terms of recruiting, RF. Not fan support.

In any case, I agree with you. Siena is, IMO, our next best option. I'd rather see a northern team than a southern one, but I just want the strongest program possible.

this is why Mason got the call:

First VCU, now George Mason. The two mid-majors that made stunning runs to the Final Four from the Colonial Athletic Association will reunite in the Atlantic 10.
Total perception pick.

yep, Albany area includes Schenectady, Troy, and sizable exurbs that add up to a decent media market (about the same as Richmond) and it also has very little competition from larger schools nearby (maybe Syracuse or Uconn? If so, I haven't seen much of it). If Siena can get another coach that can elevate the program, all the other elements are there for a solid A10 program. There just aren't a lot of other schools that can say that on the East Coast, everyone else has more structural limitations than Siena.

I don't think there's any reason a team in near the city of Charlotte couldn't be successful in the A10. The issues with Charlotte in the A10 were the confluence of several problems at once, but mostly due to a highly regarded coach on a long, steady decline. One issue with moving south to Davidson/College of Charleston though is that now the schools added have small athletic budgets to deal with non-revenue sports travel over longer distances, as opposed to the last 4 teams added. There's a decent chance they'll say no to the invitation due to this risk (if they don't get enough higher revenue from the conference, they aren't going to offset the increased costs involved). I think you're risking Fordham part 2, except it's in the south with higher travel costs.

Western Kentucky and James Madison both have football aspirations. Western Kentucky is either already invited or soon to be invited to CUSA. What may prove interesting is what happens with these schools after the next round of realignment if they get completely excluded from the big money.

Of course perception plays a role. GM is perceived to be a quality program that could do even better in a higher-profile league. You know there are no home runs out there, jpschmack. I don't see any schools head and shoulders above Mason.

Meh
Does less than nothing for me. Thats not meant as a shot at George Mason. I understand why the east coast schools desire them but here in St Louis all it will do is increase the clamoring for SLU to get out of this league.

If you guys are already leaving, it doesn't matter. The A-10 has to act in its best interest. If we can't do anything to stop SLU and Dayton, then we'll do the next best thing.

You don't cater to schools that you know are on the way out. It's just common sense.

Understood but does McGlade know something we don't know? All we know for sure is the the Big East is at 10 and may very well stay at 10. SLU has not been offered anything at this point in terms of an invite to go anywhere else

Administrators talk. My guess is McGlade knows which teams the NBE will go after IF they eventually expand to 12 teams.

In any case, the A-10 says the vote to accept Mason was unanimous. I assume that means every school voted to accept GM, including SLU.
