I think every coach is more or less safe except those with 4+ Burnin' Bernies.
Kellogg is a 0, as much as anyone in the conference. There is a lingering perception among many here that he 1. can't coach, and 2. is in danger of losing his job.

Both are just flat wrong, and it's obvious to those who watch a decent amount of their games.

Same with Schmidt, though the perception is not as common.

Kellogg and Schmidt have had their Bernie Count edited.

Re: A-10 Hot Seat Index: The Burnin' Bernies

i think kellogg is safe.

sure he's been on the job 6 years but the last 2 have seen significant (starters, 6th men) players miss 4+ months of playing time each of the last 2 season and still just miss the tournament.

I'd agree with Kellog being fine, that being said I'm certainly interested to see what he can do WITHOUT Chaz Williams. VCU's Anthony Grant decided it wasn't worth it to have a go without Eric Maynor when he graduated.

I don't think there's any risk of Kellogg going anywhere. He's a UMass guy through and through.

Chaz is definitely a special player, but we survived after Maynor and I think UMass should be fine as well after Chaz. Lots of good recruits will be paying attention to UMass if they keep up the season they've been having.

Or did it have more to do with his agent yelling "Show me the money!!" while negotiating with Alabama?

I think Crews is very similar to Kellogg in that we'll see more when the Majerus class graduates.

At this point, the only search committee at SLU is the one looking for Father Biondi's replacement.

Chaz isn't really a replaceable player, he's been a program changer. They do have a very talented guy waiting in the wings, though.

UMass will be significantly weaker next year without Chaz (see La Salle this year).

Re: A-10 Hot Seat Index: The Burnin' Bernies

This is a very interesting approach. It points up the (often unrealistic) expectations of fans. Successful programs might be ones that do well, graduate players, have good support, etc.

But the criteria over the years has been pushed into a win only outlook, and maybe more than that it's "get to the dance" in defining a successful program, and/or retaining a coach.
The power of a Final Four appearance can be extraordinary. You have a good coach like Smart, and all of a sudden his recruiting takes another step forward and he (and the school) are in an even better position for continued success. Same with Majerus' power to recruit into St. Louis.

For Richmond, they have been successful...but not with the consistent NCAA metric that everyone uses. Lacking that makes recruiting even more difficult. It's a viscous circle, and often one very, very good player (Chaz?) can spring you out of the middle of the pack.

It's a good thing Mack isn't still here. He'd for sure get a couple of Bernies, and have to drive the bus into the river to extinguish them.

Mack probably wouldn't have many Bernies. If he did, you have suggested the proper method for putting them out.

Other than maybe Shaka, no one should have 0 bernies based on their explanations.

Re: A-10 Hot Seat Index: The Burnin' Bernies

So few Burnin' Bernies speaks volumes to the level coaching talent in the A10 right now. It's a sheer embarrassment of riches. And, as someone who roots for one of the conference's few have-nots, it only makes things more pronounced.

That is true.

And I still wish we had our last coach around.
