This is interesting, how does the viscous circle work? I'd like to learn more.

Thanks.

Hmm. The spell check didn't help. Don't know what to tell you.
My spelling sucks?

But the criteria over the years has been pushed into a win only outlook, and maybe more than that it's "get to the dance" in defining a successful program, and/or retaining a coach.
The power of a Final Four appearance can be extraordinary. You have a good coach like Smart, and all of a sudden his recruiting takes another step forward and he (and the school) are in an even better position for continued success. Same with Majerus' power to recruit into St. Louis.

For Richmond, they have been successful...but not with the consistent NCAA metric that everyone uses. Lacking that makes recruiting even more difficult. It's a viscous circle, and often one very, very good player (Chaz?) can spring you out of the middle of the pack.

It's a good thing Mack isn't still here. He'd for sure get a couple of Bernies, and have to drive the bus into the river to extinguish them.
So you're saying being unhappy about an 8-2 start qualifies?

How on earth can Jim Ferry have two Bernies? He's in his second year, and first with his players. He's in no danger at all of being let go, and won't be next year either.

Because I moved the heading for 1 Bernie and didn't move it far enough.

Re: A-10 Hot Seat Index: The Burnin' Bernies

The opinion here seems to be that most fans/schools (with obvious exceptions) are happy with their coaching staffs and don't expect there to be much movement.

It seems pretty much that Hewitt and Martelli are doing their damndest to save their jobs. Everyone else appear to be fine.

Burnin' bernies? Sounds like gay community slang for STDs.

Did I say STDs? What I meant to say... is that it sounds like LGBT slang for dry anal.

Okay, I'm done.

Lonergan's first year record was substantially worse than Hobbs' last year. The next year we did better, but still not particularly good. needing a put back dunk vs. Dayton in the last seconds to make the A-10 tournament. Many on our board were questioning the hire, saying Lonergan should be on the on the hot seat, that we made a terrible mistake in hiring him (former alum Joe Dooley was the first choice of many) and that unless we substantially improved this season, he should be gone (even though last year we were starting 4 freshman). Those who looked a little closer saw that we were playing excellent defense, running good plays but just not finishing (missing many open looks), which is really on the players rather than the coach. This year, the team is complete Lonergan players, with one Hobbs holdover. His system that did not look very good with Hobbs players looks great with his own players. I use to hear that in fairness to the a new coach, you really should not judge him until he has had one full recruiting cycle (5 years) under the belt. I don't know how many Larraanaga players are on the current team, but give Hewitt a chance. especially now that Mason has stepped up in conferences, which opens the door to better recruits. I caught parts of the Mason/Oklahoma game at the BB&T, and at least to me, Oklahoma just seemed to have better talent. From what I saw, Mason seemed to be lacking mobility down low (such as GW has with Armwood), and the bigs were not able to defend Sooner players that seemed to drive the lane with impunity. A good recruit or 2 can fix that. Give Hewitt at least one or 2 more recruiting classes to catch up, then call for his head
I don't know Lonergan's history, but I would imagine it's somewhat different from Hewitt's, who was recently paid $7M to not coach GT. When Hewitt was first hired, my little brother (GT alum) told us to expect no offense, but decent recruits. Hewitt's been here for three years and we're seeing just that. Our team simply will disappear for 5-10 minute segments in a game. It's incredibly frustrating to watch, and it falls on the coach to fix this. This year's team is no different than last years in that regard. Signs of incredible potential, then just inexplicable mental vacations. Perhaps it is the current batch of seniors (our front court folds like lawn chairs), but there is no heart on our team.

In his defense, his true recruits (Jenkins, Moore, PH, Marko) are playing some very good basketball (with heart, too). I think he has one more season after this to prove his worth. If there isn't vast improvement mentally within the team after that, we are simply setting up our team for a lost decade... just like the Japanese....
