A-10 Hot Seat Index: The Burnin' Bernies

From judging by fan reaction in here, there are some coaches who should be looking over their shoulder.

We'll measure the heat from 0-5 Burnin' Bernies.

Legend:
5 Bernies---Umm, you may want to scan the classified ads or look at retirement homes.
4 Bernies---Time to get it in gear.
3 Bernies---Moderate Heat, but fixable
2 Bernies---Relatively Safe
1 Bernie ---Would take an unforseen turn of events.
0 Bernies---Is not leaving this job at the hands of the employing school.

5 Bernies
Phil Martelli, St. Joe--the website is up. That's worth a ride to the top of the list.

4 Bernies
Paul Hewitt, George Mason--the rumor is that he can recruit and can't coach. First year in the A-10 will tell a lot.

2 Bernies

Jim Crews, Saint Louis--not a great start, and things aren't looking as good as they should. Seeing bracket projections with SLU out of it and some other possible information leads Crews upward.

Tom Pecora, Fordham--Tough job, but Severe looks to be extremely good. He looks to be a potential building block piece. Probably needs some conference success to stay at 2 Bernies though.

Jim Ferry, Duquense--Another rebuild in process for the Dukes. I think Ferry gets a couple more years to see if he can make it right in Pittsburgh.

1 Bernie

Derek Kellogg, UMass--this team will push Kellogg towards the bottom of the list quickly. Great start for the Minutemen as he tries to erase some of recent history. He's got the squad to make it to 0 Bernies.

Mark Schmidt, St. Bonaventure--Dangerous team who just made the tournament 2 years ago. Not sure how happy St. B fans are, but it's gotta be better now than in the wake of He who shalt not be named.

Dr. John Giannini, Lasalle--Sweet 16 last year, this year some struggles. But that 2nd weekend will last awhile.

Chris Mooney, Richmond--Team was very good not long ago. Needs a little better year to stave off ending up with multiple Bernies after the season.

Mike Lonergan, George Washington--Very good start for the Colonials. This team will be a tough draw every night.

0 Bernies
Shaka Smart, VCU--He's not going anywhere unless he wants to. So far, he hasn't wanted to yet.

Danny Hurley, URI--Big rebuilding project is in its second year. Recruiting has been very good.

Archie Miller, Dayton--It's your time, sir. Probably not in job jeopardy, and could really use a big year for UD. Start was great (ISU notwithstanding).

Like the idea, but I think you got a little Bernie-happy. A few of those guys are safer than you indicate, in my opinion.

And a few might even be on hotter seats, or so I hope.

Isn't that the first stage of Pyromania?

Hewitt may get one more year because Mason can't afford to buy him out or to lose his impressive 2014 recruiting class.

Re: A-10 Hot Seat Index

For those with relatively new coaches (especially Mason), take a step back. GW is in its 3rd year with Lonergan and doing quite well. The first couple of years were not good, however. Lonergan's first year record was substantially worse than Hobbs' last year. The next year we did better, but still not particularly good. needing a put back dunk vs. Dayton in the last seconds to make the A-10 tournament. Many on our board were questioning the hire, saying Lonergan should be on the on the hot seat, that we made a terrible mistake in hiring him (former alum Joe Dooley was the first choice of many) and that unless we substantially improved this season, he should be gone (even though last year we were starting 4 freshman). Those who looked a little closer saw that we were playing excellent defense, running good plays but just not finishing (missing many open looks), which is really on the players rather than the coach. This year, the team is complete Lonergan players, with one Hobbs holdover. His system that did not look very good with Hobbs players looks great with his own players. I use to hear that in fairness to the a new coach, you really should not judge him until he has had one full recruiting cycle (5 years) under the belt. I don't know how many Larraanaga players are on the current team, but give Hewitt a chance. especially now that Mason has stepped up in conferences, which opens the door to better recruits. I caught parts of the Mason/Oklahoma game at the BB&T, and at least to me, Oklahoma just seemed to have better talent. From what I saw, Mason seemed to be lacking mobility down low (such as GW has with Armwood), and the bigs were not able to defend Sooner players that seemed to drive the lane with impunity. A good recruit or 2 can fix that. Give Hewitt at least one or 2 more recruiting classes to catch up, then call for his head

Re: A-10 Hot Seat Index

I almost listed Hewitt as no grade because they haven't played a game in the A-10, but Mason fans have been pretty much in agreement that he isn't doing a great job.

Jim Crews is probably pretty darn safe at Saint Louis.

Derek Kellogg is extinguishing Flaming Bernies as we speak.

Can I suggest a change to "Burnin' Bernies" for the affect of alliteration?

Re: A-10 Hot Seat Index: The Burnin' Bernies

I feel like Hewitt and Phil are far and away the most likely to get fired. The other guys are incredibly unlikely. The only other one I think has a real chance is Kellogg and this team would have to literally tank the rest of the way for that to happen.

I think every coach is more or less safe except those with 4+ Burnin' Bernies.

Re: A-10 Hot Seat Index: The Burnin' Bernies

Hewitt should get at most 3 Bernies. He has some good recruits coming in and HIS young players have looked good at times. However, if the team completely falls apart in conference play, he may resign and live off his $7M Georgia Tech forced retirement check. Just speculation on my part. I have heard nothing.

The "new coach" idea is difficult to quantify. Rick Majerus took over in a bad situation post-Soderberg at SLU...but we all knew Rick Majerus wasn't getting fired, period.

Rick would be at zero Bernies if he was still on this earth by the way.
