re: 2016-2017 Saint Joseph's University Hawks

Jack Kraft, an all-time great coach at Villanova and later Rhode Island--and a Hawk who played from 1940-1942 under legendary coach Bill Ferguson--has passed away at the age of 93. He led the Wildcats to a NC game, two Elite 8s, a S16, and a bunch of NIT wins (when it meant something), and owns the highest winning percentage in V history at .715.

Another all-time great coach (and Hawk) has left us. Another sad day. More at the link.

re: 2016-2017 Saint Joseph's University Hawks

Sad news for Rhody fans as well. Kraft resurrected the program and put together one of the best URI teams of all time in 1978. He unfortunately had to step down a few years later due to heart issues. Kraft has stayed connected to URI ever since. I saw him just a few years back at a URI night at a Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston AAA affiliate) game.

RIP Coach

I was guessing that 3rd game (NIT) would be either Stonybrook or LIU, probably getting the home court determined who would show up. Shame we couldn't get that 4th one. At least you now can prepare, although the scheduling is a bit jumbled. Denver to Spokane, or vice versa, would have been better.

Sadly that's the nature of the exempt tourneys. 4 count as 1, so if the format changes, too bad. That's why the d2 teams were going to be added.

That's a joke, right. The NCAA botched their own tournament, they own the NIT, right?

Nobody wants to play in it. They all have options that are better/pay more.

That is the nature of the beast.

That wasn't my point. SJU, the other schools went into this with the expectations of 4 games. You waive the requirement if you (ncaa) screwed up. It probably got too late to make right. Tournaments with 4 home schools/pods (16 teams)however, should be history. It borders on being a reincarnation of those old
Hawk "Classic" early season tournament. Scheduling has become a nightmare, these tournaments have sprung up to mollify the true issues. Nobody in the BCS has the stones to play true road games. NCAA should mandate a more balance to these (OOC) schedules, if only to prove the point, its as much for the student body as it is for the players.

The women's team still played a hawk classic until two seasons ago. Thankfully they got rid of it. Teams were so awful.

NCAA can't mandate shit, especially when it comes to scheduling.

I'd imagine SJU might be able to add a game under the nit banner, possibly, but it's whatever. would you take a d2 team right now? I'd rather lose a game than, you know, actually lose a game--especially to a d2 team.

I'd take Stonybrook, earlier, move Zaga, if you could, to the Denver trip. Scheduling is a nightmare to begin with, the ncaa just totally butchered it. Hopefully, this nit 16 team thing is history. An 8 team style over Thanksgiving weekend would be a lot better, Wed/Fri/Sat. Screw the islands. Although I like Charleston, great town.

I think the 8 team format, the one we'll see this year, is the best option they have.

Bring them all to the Garden, Thursday they can march in the Parade. (of course, they'll want personal appearance money).

The guy who could be in line for a breakout season for St. Joe's? Isaiah Miles. 6-7 junior will log serious minutes. Door is wide open.

Aside from a lack of experience, the biggest concern from an early look at St. Joe's is outside shooting. Hawks lack reliable shot makers.

I love it when Martelli says he will change styles. He is really saying more weave and chuck.
