re: 2016-2017 Saint Joseph's University Hawks

Just saw this. Some quotes to the Inquirer on Media Day:

Quote:
On when he turned the page from last season's success:
Graduation day. When those guys walked across the stage and they got their degrees, then - and these words didn't go so well for a former president, but - mission accomplished, at that point. To me, it was time. People would say, "How about when they got their rings, or the ordering of a banner." No, that was it. That season ended when those guys graduated, and now we have this new group to work with.

On how DeAndre' Bembry and Chris Wilson have handled stepping into leadership roles:
Phenomenally. I just described a scene, and maybe it was because I happened to be there. We don't sub in practice, they sub themselves. So when you're on a team, you sub in and out on your own. The only thing that will get you off the court is if you complain about something that is out of your control, i.e. refereeing in practice. I don't referee - no one referees.

So we had a guy complaining. I took him off the court and put him on the side, put another guy in and let him play. DeAndre' took himself out of the scrimmage, out of the competition that we were in, and stood next to the guy with me not far from him, hearing him. He said, "Listen, he's not putting you back in. So you had better put yourself back in and prove that you have grown up, or he's going to leave you over here for the rest of the day." And I was like, wow. [Bembry] has an old mind. He really has an old mind, and an old heart.

And Chris has always carried himself as a leader. Chris' story to me would be: Chris is very spiritual, and we have a kid who committed to us because Chris, on [the recruit's] visit, talked to the kid about going to church every Sunday. And [Wilson] said, "If he comes here, I'll make sure he goes to church every Sunday." That was phenomenal to me. Because I wasn't taking the kid to church every Sunday. Chris did. I go to Church every Sunday, but I wasn't taking him.

On what he has in this year's team, and what he needs:
Well, from a skills point of view, we have really good guard play in Chris and DeAndre'. And what we need is we're going to need to get these guys experienced and comfortable faster, sooner rather than later. What we don't have is we don't shoot the ball real well.
So far we're pretty good defensively - we'll guard the ball, but some of that is going to be trial and error. Because if the games are going to be called the way they were last year, we don't want to foul.

Wee have a little bit more depth, but if you were to come watch us practice, you'd say, "I don't know if they're going to score enough points." So we're going to have to play faster. The pace is good, the work ethic is great, the character is really good. But in pure basketball skills, we lack shooting.

On how the Power 5 conferences' rule-making ability will affect the Atlantic 10:
We can make all the decisions that we want, but until those five say this is the way that it's going to be, then the Atlantic 10 can go to the table with their presidents and their athletic directors and say, "What do you want to be a part of?" We can't be a part of all that they're going to do, but we can be a part of some of the things.

If it's cost of attendance, then we're all in on cost of attendance. If it's unlimited meals, then we're all in on unlimited meals. If it's scheduling a certain way, then we're all in. My thing would be: the Atlantic 10, because of Bernadette. Is going to be at the table. And when we're at the table, we can't sit on the sideline.

We have to speak up and we have to be making statements that are for the greater good - what's best for our student-athletes, not leaving people aside, not apologizing for how we do things. And at the end of the day, the Atlantic 10 is going to be at the table. They're going to tell you whether it's a round table or a long table - that's the way it's going to be.

[...]
Look, I'll be honest with you: the younger guys at this table, you're going to be around when they change the [NCAA] tournament. A lot of us, we're not going to be around when they change the tournament.

They can't mess with the tournament because of the television contract, and they can't mess with the tournament because even they don't have enough guts to stand in front of the public and say, "You know what? You don't really want to see St. Joe's play UConn, you really want to see Mississippi State play Arkansas." That's where they're going.

[...]
To me, if they ever go to free agency - which is what they want - when they go to free agency, then we've got a problem. Because DeAndre' Bembry is going to be poached. They'll let him play with us for two years, and then they'll say, okay, we'll take him. And what kid could resist that? That's what I fear.

[...]
On cost of attendance, we have to make a decision. Each of our schools has to say, "Yes, we can do this." That's fine. On recruiting rules, they can make any rules they want. Duke's getting Duke players, St. Joe's is getting St. Joe's players, UMass is getting UMass players. That hasn't changed. We've had all these different rules. The transfer rule scares the hell out of me.

Saint Joe's will wear a uniform patch in 2014-15 honoring Dr. Jack Ramsay

Saint Joseph's men's basketball team will wear a uniform patch this season that honors the late Dr. Jack Ramsay, according to the Associated Press' Dan Gelston.

After graduating from then-Saint Joseph's College in 1949, Ramsay coached at Saint Joseph's from 1955 until 1966, amassing a 234-72 record and nine postseason berths. During his time at the helm of the Hawks he mentored five future NBA coaches, including Jack McKinney and Paul Westhead.

Ramsay also coached for 21 years in the NBA with the Buffalo Braves, Philadelphia 76ers, Portland Trail Blazers and Indiana Pacers. He passed away in April at the age of 89.

Saint Joseph's opens the season Nov. 14 against Farleigh Dickinson.

Thanks for posting, AA. I meant to but forgot.

The patch itself is hideous and should have been plaid in typical Dr. Jack style.

Still, a good move nonetheless.

Do you have a photo of the patch to share?

Absolutely. For some reason I thought there would be issues with the NCAA approval or something, but that was all for naught.

You are right. It is huge and plain. Still.....it is great that SJU is honoring Dr. Jack.

He's got an offer list that completely runs the gamut.

Very interesting...

Seems like too late an offer from SJU, though. No ground floor entry here.

Some tidbits from the supposedly secret scrimmage the Hawks had against Seton Hall the other night ago (@ Seton Hall). No idea how the tweeters got this information. Regardless, they're not affiliated with the Hawks.

@t heBballDiary "St Joseph and Seton Hall had a scrimmage tonight. Heard at one point SHU down 21 points. SJU won by 1. Isaiah Whitehead 12 point 8 rebounds."

@MS EBasketball - "Shavar Newkirk had 9pts 2ass 3stls 1 reb with no turnovers for St. Joe's in scrimmage vs Seton Hall. Pretty Impressive for a freshman. #NBA "

It would be a very big plus if Newkirk is able to make a contribution as a freshman, regardless of the silly NBA hashtag.

Quote:
The men's basketball team held its annual Media Day on Monday at Hagan Arena. Here are a few of head coach Phil Martelli's thoughts on this year's team:

On changes from last season…

"This has been different, but it really has been exhilarating in a way. Sometimes I look around, and I really do miss Halil telling me what I should be doing or what I should be saying. I really do miss that part. He was right. He was absolutely right. And he wasn't afraid to tell you he was right. But this group, they're such nice kids, and they're really good teammates. It has been easy to be with them . . We've gone a little bit slower, but there's all kinds of things that you go over where you think, 'I hadn't thought about that.' What's the role on the foul line? What's the difference between the end of a half and the end of a game? They just don't know. They've played it, and some of them are experienced guys who have been in the gym, but now they're going to be featured players. We're going to have an intrasquad scrimmage on Wednesday night (Nov. 5) for our students and season ticket holders, and we're putting them in uniform. We're going to wear their actual game uniforms so that whatever nervousness that can bring out in them won't be there for the FDU game, because we have to win that night."

Do you worry about throwing too much on DeAndre's shoulders?

"That's an interesting question . . . We don't do real scientific statting during practice, but if you look at our stats during practice, he's our leading scorer and leading rebounder. He leads us in assists. He probably leads in minutes played if we added up minutes during practice. He's now the back-up to the back-up point guard. So, there are times when I worry. I'm delighted to say that he will not have to be the primary perimeter defender. James Demery will be the primary perimeter defender. And when I talked to DeAndre about it, it kind of rolls off of his back. He's an old spirit. He's a basketball player, and that's how he wants to be seen. He's not afraid to take on the responsibilities of being the first sophomore captain here since 1936 and a defending Atlantic 10 champion. None of that seems to much matter to him. I am concerned. I do have it in the back of my head about how I hold him to a standard. Like his three-point shooting isn't what I would have thought it would be based on his spring, summer, and fall workouts. So, am I asking too much?

What are you expecting from Aaron Brown this year?

I expect him to be an older guy. He was a wonderful teammate last year, and what we need on this team is some guys who have been through college basketball and played in some of the places that he's played. Aaron is going to have to score the ball for us. He's going to have to be a basketball player . . . He's going to be a great example to watch all year long because he’s a local kid who came home and that can be both a blessing and a curse. This is a local kid playing in front of his family and friends.

How will you replace Langston's shooting?

It's impossible . . . We've had to change the way we play. We're going to try to drive the ball more. We're going to try to make more lay-ups and play a little bit more aggressively offensively.

From Media Day:

DeAndre Bembry is the first sophomore captain at SJU since 1936. That's a long God damn time.
