If the public had any say then there certainly would be no FBS football. I was an enthusiastic supporter of the upgrade even though it happened fifteen years too late but I think it's pretty obvious that the Hail Mary didn't work. It scares me that the Big 12 is expanding (of course UMass isn't under consideration) and people are thinking : "this is our chance to get into the AAC". Are you f'ing kidding me??? Leaving the A10 for the AAC would suck as the AAC is now but it will really suck after the Big 12 poaches their best programs.

re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

^ They've played 4 seasons since moving up and you're ready to call it a failure already? It was always going to need more than 4 years to get acclimated to FBS.

The latest scuttlebutt is that the B12 will add 2 schools and BYU, Houston and Cincinnati are likely the 3 top contenders. An AAC with UConn, Memphis, Temple, SMU etc and maybe Cincinnati with UMass added in is a very good basketball league.

It doesn't matter, niles, if it's four years or forty years. If you aren't in the P5 football game now, you won't be... unless your'e one of these grubby fuckers like Houston or Memphis. I mean "grubby" in a good way... I guess.

Just remember that you guys are the Massachusetts Minutemen. Refuse to motherfucking LOSE. Let's party.

Not sure I trust your crystal ball, it's impossible to know how things are going to shake out with realignment.

If UMass goes to the AAC and down the road it doesn't work out, I feel pretty confident that the A10 would take UMass back. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, at this point there's not a lot of long-term risk with going to the AAC, but there is the potential (however small it may be) for reward.

FBS Football not in the P5 will be indistinguishable from FCS football except that it will cost a lot more and create more Title IX liability. The upgrade's only chance for success was a P5 invite. It was a one in a million and it didn't hit. It's time for fans to face reality.

re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

There is another school of thought. The P5 will continue to have most of the money and are way ahead of most G5 programs. There could be another split in 10 years that some of the better G5 programs are included and UMass wants to be part of that group. So absolutely need to go for the AAC. The better G5 programs will also pull away from FCS as some/many can not afford COA.

Back to basketball, Hines looks very good and not slow like last year (injured). Same for Coleman and with the depth, perhaps Coleman can stay healthy play 10-15 minutes. Think Baldwin will be a crowd favorite. We'll have shooters and Jarreau can easily shift hands and beat his man. Anderson will be the other point guard is very steady. We have multiple, good talent at every position.

Very excited about this season as most do not have high expectations. This team can make the post season, probably NIT but it's only August now. We'll have to see.

The A10 is going to rock this season!

Hey Steve - have you seen them in person yet? It would be fantastic if Hines looks improved. He was an utter disappointment to me last year after all the hype - he did not look like he could run to half court even one time never mind a 10 minute stretch.

As for football, there will still be some evolution of the P5 as it exists today. IMO the 16 team conference is too big - for scheduling purposes, but the jury is still out on this. I think that you will end of with a total of 8 "P5 level" groups that have 12 -14 teams each. Over the next 10 years this FCS group will be weeded out and conferences like the MAC and Sunbelt will compress as schools go all in or all out - the more and more kids that get hurt playing youth football, the less and less the talent pool will allow for this and these smaller schools will have nobody left of quality to field a competitive team and that will separate the wannabe's from the ones that can handle the longer run.

As Steve noted, that is the hurdle Umass needs to get over before this all implodes and the final lines are drawn.

I'm getting my usual unrealistically excited for UMass. I'm such a Charlie Brown and DK is a very mean Lucy.

Pump the brakes Steve - I am not saying to be happy with a 15-15 season, but a reasonable win total of 17 or 18 should be enough to raise expectations for the following 17'-18' season! This is a pretty weak schedule overall so that should be attainable (I think???).

IMO the undoing of DK would be too high a bar. Like it or not, he is not the offensive wizzard we all wish he was, and he has a bunch of young kids that need to learn the ropes. That is a recipe for mediocrity (by the measure of w/l).

I am cautiously excited too - but more on the player development side than the win total. If they get better this year and learn how to play at this level this season the wins will follow.

Think the Providence game will say if the freshman need a year, start of conference play or ready to go.

You are probably right - freshmen are such wild cards - you just don't know how they will respond, how consistent they can be, and how much DK will actually use/rely on them.

I do think that if any success/failure must rest on the shoulders of Anderson, then this class is a bust of sorts. Anderson is just not D1 worthy.

just needs to be steady and make good decisions. You'll love this one, like DK was as a player.

It will be interesting to see if DK will play Pipkins and Jarreau over CJ. Anderson is clearly not the future of UMass basketball at PG. I think most would agree that both Pip and Dejon have more talent than Anderson. What they lack is D1 experience, and they need to play as much as possible.

Not going to look for the arena porn thread and posting this here. Sure looks like we are seating miles away in this photo.

Dual-purpose arenas are great for hockey. Not so much for basketball.
