Umass really sucked - I woke up with this vision of the last place team in the A-10 beating the ever-lovin-shit out of us - it was very unsettling................ Wait - what - THIS REALLY HAPPENED?

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

Reading UMassHoops, Micah Shrewsberry and Chris Caputo are getting the most play. The Boston media machine has been talking about Shrewsberry and there is even on poster claiming someone saw Shrewsberry walking through the Champion Center.

Going to add some stuff from a poster TheChamp

Quote:
A few things on Shrewsberry:

- He's well respected. On all the Celtics boards, NOBODY want him to leave. They all say they wish it were another of the assistants. They mention that he went undefeated in the summer league. Larranaga lost a bunch of games with the same roster.

- Our defense would be something special. Wouldn't that be something for a change? Those Butler teams played so hard and disciplined on the defensive end. Always exceeded their talent. ON the offensive end too. Few mistakes. Clean, hard, workmanline, team above individual. Basically the opposite of UMass the past 15 years. SIgn me up.

- I think he'll able to recruit. IF he gets the job, look for us to be in play with 2018 SG Eric Hunter Jr. who he has a relationship with. Top-100 guy. Shrewsberry recruited Vincent Edwards to Purdue. Very good player. He's been a solid recruiter for major programs before, but yes, it's been a while. He's going to put us in play for guys from Indiana, specifically Indianapolis where he was kind of a top guy recruiting wise, and the rust belt--- and there's a lot of, often undervalued and overlooked, talent there. Also, Butler went to the final 4 with UMass level recruits. I think the concern is more from him being out of the scene for 4 years than from his personality. He has to have some great contacts from his years at Butler and Purdue, two colleges which have historically recruited well in the northeast.

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

^ UMass' coaching search has been wild. Tons of rumors, many of them conflicting, but almost no substantial/credible info to be found. One minute I think I understand what's happening and who's being targeted, then next it's completely changed around. I had been told after the fact that the final three was Kelsey, Caputo and Becker. Rhoades was in play but UMass got wind of the whole VCU thing and so they took Rhoades off their board before they got to a final 3. Someone else is claiming that UMass wanted Rhoades but before they could get a deal done Wade left VCU and the rest is history.

Shrewsberry is really the only guy I'm hearing about right now (even though he wasn't a finalist the first time), but there was ZERO talk about Kelsey before he was hired, so who the fuck knows.

Not that it's related to your post, but Butler was lead to the two F4's by a NBA Lottery pick. Stevens was a great college coach but he wasn't exactly running the Little Sisters of the Poor out there. They were a step above UMASS

Gordon Heyward only played on the first Butler team.

Really see alot of signs that Micah Shrewsberry will be our next coach. Why else would he be reaching out inquiring about local talent.

AP story from the Boston Herald.
Quote:
Micah Shrewsberry confirmed today that he will meet with UMass officials tomorrow morning in what is the Celtics assistant’s second interview for the vacant men’s basketball job.

Shrewsberry also said he will go into the meeting with an open mind, not knowing what he will do if the job is offered.

But according to a league source knowledgeable of the off-kilter dynamics at play in Amherst, “it sounds like the job is his if he wants it.”

The program has been reeling since Thursday, when Winthrop’s Pat Kelsey pulled out of the job after not only agreeing to take the job, but after the athletic department set up a press conference to introduce the coach.

The source said that UMass officials then turned to a highly regarded, unidentified Division 1 assistant coach who pulled his name out of consideration Saturday morning. In the meantime, officials reached out to Shrewsberry to come in for a second interview.

He was part of a group that also included Joe Dooley (Florida Gulf Coast), Mike Rhoades (now at VCU) and the aforementioned assistant coach.

Shrewsberry was known to be making calls this weekend to local coaches in an attempt to get an idea of local talent, including one geographic location that has long been off the UMass radar — the Boston area.

Anthony Gurley, who transferred from Wake Forest to UMass and played his final season for the Minutemen in 2010-11, is the last Boston player to make an appearance on the UMass roster.

And there was indeed a time when UMass had a Boston pipeline, including St. John’s transfer Shannon Crooks (2001-02), Monty Mack (1996-01), Jonathan DePina (1997-01) and Carmelo Travieso, a starter on the Minutemen team that reached the 1996 Final Four before losing to eventual champion Kentucky.

Boston Celtics assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry told the Boston Herald he will interview with UMass Monday for its vacant head coaching position. This will be Shrewsberry’s second interview.

According to sources familiar with the process, Shrewsberry is one of a small group of candidates still involved in the process. UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford reportedly met with an unidentified coach Sunday and might meet with another after Shrewsberry on Monday.

The Herald article, which didn’t quote Shrewsberry directly, said he didn’t know what he’d do if the job was offered.

Shrewsberry’s candidacy has leapt considerably since the search restarted after Winthrop coach Pat Kelsey was hired and then changed his mind last week. According to a different source, Shrewsberry has assured UMass that he’d be able to start in Amherst immediately and wouldn’t need to complete the Celtics’ season.

Shrewsberry, 40, is in his fourth season with the Celtics. He’d been a Division I assistant coach at Purdue (2011-13) and before that was with Celtics’ coach Brad Stevens at Butler (2008-2011).

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

While I'd prefer someone who has head coaching experience already, I'd be happy with Shrewsberry. An added bonus with that is with NBA experience (and under one of the great young coaches out there to boot) it might help convince some of the young guys who were brought in by Kellogg to stick around if they were hovering in a questionable state right now.
