Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

Holy Cross was a step backwards.

They are going to be up and down like this all year I suppose, but hopefully the highs and lows will not be so far apart as the season progresses.....

That has always been my main rub with our coach. Progress over the course of the season seems to lag. My fingers are crossed that this year things will be different.

On to the Mensa Squad at Haav-aahd.....

At least this year (so far) the step backwards still resulted in a W.

Yup - I will take a win whenever I can get it.

In the DK era this has been called "playing down to the competition". For now [at least] I am willing to go with the youth movement argument.

He just needs to smooth this out.

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

Jarreau out 4-6 with Stress fracture in foot. There was a strange play in the Ole Miss game where he tripped on his own foot - I wonder if that is when it happened.

Regardless that sucks for Umass - and this kind of injury lingers so it could be the end of his season if that is the case. The only upside is he still qualifies for a medical redshirt right now.

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

Jezus - we (Umass) are looking like the Detroit Lions, they (Detroit) have 7 wins and have been behind in the 4th quarter in every game so for - that is quite remarkable actually.

At the very least they are "learning" how to win games. I may be gray or bald if the entire season goes like this, but hopefully it will pay dividends down the road.....

Brison Gresham has been cleared to play. UMass will have a formidable front court by conference play.

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

^ His impact on the offensive end might be minimal, but I think his impact on the defensive end will be immense. UMass hasn't had a really good rim protector since Kellogg has taken over, but I think we finally have one with Gresham.

^ Putney? Absolutely not. I'd say he's built more like Jr/Sr year Esho.

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

I'm working off a very small sample size, but watching this team lose a game has been more enjoyable to me than watching a Chaz Williams led team win one. And this is just the start, it feels like those wins will soon start piling up too.

You know what - I had the same feeling but could not put it into words like you did.

As great as he was at/for Umass there was a frustration watching him and a sense of "ok how is he going to derail this". Whether it was an ill advised drive to the paint for a blocked shot, or a head scratching 3 pointer, you just felt like it was coming at any time..... and it usually did. As many games as he won for them, it felt like he also caused games to be closer than they needed to be with his schtick....

Now I find myself looking for signs of greatness and better things to come as opposed to waiting for the other shoe to drop. I really like the overall chemistry of this team, they still do some maddening things but it seems like rookie mistakes as opposed to an alpha-dog trying to mark his territory....

I remain skeptical of DK's ability to get the most out of this group, but they are a huge step up in overall talent regardless and that makes them more enjoyable to see...

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

A little discouraged about the PC game. Another loss they could have won.

The upside for me is that they are making "youth" mistakes that are all correctable...

Too many deep balls (bad timing)
[really] Poor Foul Shooting
Turnovers

Every post game assessment on the UMass board starts with "well, they play bad but..."

These things will hold them back this season, but given the overall lousy schedule they are not being held back from much regardless - they look like they could be a solid NIT team as long as they can make some small improvements on the three glaring holes note above.

The defense looks pretty good - that will get better too, but they are definitely ahead in that part of the game.

The next three games are cupcake-city - hopefully they will have a nice double digit OOC win total going into the conference schedule. They have a tough A-10 run out of the gate in January.

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

We were trying to prep for a party, but I watched most of it sideways. They were sloppy and the refs were clearly in Providence's pocket, so it's hard to get too upset about the outcome.

I'm still trying to figure out what they were thinking near the end of the 1st half. They bled the clock, which never, ever, ever works for them, and I couldn't understand why. They took the inevitable bad shot at the shot clock buzzer and Providence still had a full 35 seconds to work with.

Still, I like watching this team. I suspect I'll actually get my butt in gear and head out for a couple of games after the holidays. I'm going to try and find a line that blocks Kellogg's view of the clocks. Nothing good ever happens when he starts watching a clock.

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

I need to start paying attention again. What the heck is the 'Gotham Classic'? What a bizarre format. And what a truckload of crappy teams. The Minutemen are finally interesting again, but this is garbage is not going to help get the attendance back where it needs to be.
