They looked totally unprepared to play a competitive game of basketball. They definitely take a lot of bad shots. But they also take (and miss) a lot of shots that need to be made if the team is going to be successful. Holloway was being boxed in by 2-3 defenders before he even got the basketball and there were zero driving lanes as the SJU defense sagged way off the 3pt line.

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

They look they they are playing with too much awareness of where "the line" is....

Take an f-ing open shot whenever and wherever it is open whether it is 18 feet or 22 feet away. They are looking for 3's more than they are looking for open shots.

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

Well - that's a wrap. I am thinking we have about 15 more months of enduring DK - thank you - you F-ing A-hole John McCutcheon for screwing us over with that phat 5 year 1.0M per extension!

Umass cannot afford to buy him out more than 1 year early so it will be one more year.

On the bright side though...............

Umass is about to embark on a 5 or 6 game winning streak. It is an annual tradition, Umass loses a game that breaks the spirit of the fan base. Lucy emerges from the shed and tees up nice new shiny football and holds it out there for everyone to kick..... Umass will win 5 or 6 in a row and melt the ice that has formed around the fan base and the it will come..... The proverbial statement on the Umass board...... "Hey I think we could actually get to 10 wins" and not have to play the first day of the A-10 tourney. Nobody will want to play us in the tourney..... Lucy will have the biggest smile on her face at that point......

That should fall right around a homer with Davidson. That should set up nicely for Gibbs to break the Mullins Scoring record that day, Lucy pulls the ball and DK missed and does a triple-lindy onto his head and the season is over....

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

One observation to my scenario above:

When you are living in the Umass/Amherst Bubble you get rolled up in all thing Umass and forget about the national part. Calling for DK's job and thinking he is firmly sitting on the hot seat seems very real, but the reality is that it is only the perspective of the disenchanted fans....

However, I am starting to see things outside of the Umass family alluding to trouble in Amherst. It is one thing for the AD to hear it internally, but when the national talking heads are saying it............

This pleases me.....

With NO due respect to St Louis, if Umass loses on Wednesday I think that may be the final straw and DK will not even finish the season..... I would never root for a Umass loss, but I honestly have to say that I would not be disappointed if they came home from St Louis with another bad loss..... This not withstanding, I believe that the scenario above will play out as I have an established track record of 8 of the last 9 years to fall back on.

This team has A LOT of talent - even more than the outside observer realizes. If the people in charge can somehow figure out how to keep this class here and rid themselves of DK Umass will be immediately relevant next season and contending for the conference championship after that (if not even next year).

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

HOLY S***T! Last night was possibly one of the worst games I have seen in 30+ years of Umass Basketball.

I cannot believe we still owe Derek Kellogg $2.0M. He should be in jail for impersonating a D1 basketball coach and stealing taxpayer money.

These players have NO CLUE what they are doing on the court because they are not accountable to run anything that remotely resembles a structured offense. You have a bunch of children playing a slightly modified version of street ball offense - when they get in trouble they have no idea what to do because there is never another player in an assigned space - they could be anywhere on the floor. So it is a guessing game.

Derek Kellogg constantly refers to playing "Umass Basketball" - for those of you who do not know what that is:

1 - No rebounding
2 - Sloppy Passing
3 - No structured Offense
4 - Pressing defense that allows layups and easy baskets more often than not
5 - No in-bounds plays designed to score a quick basket
6 - Poor shooting percentages and no plays designed to get players into higher percentage shooting spaces
7 - ABSOLUTELY NO repercussions for poor play
8 - Inconsistent player rotations
9 - Little if any guidance to players coming off the floor or sitting on the bench during a game
10 - No clue whatsoever on how to break down a zone defense

THAT is Umass Basketball

The saddest thing about our situation right now is that we have a group of really talented freshmen who will likely walk after the season if DK gets canned - and maybe they walk away anyways. He sold them on this freestyle offense and immediate playing time and now they are seeing first hand why it doesn't work. My 5/6 grade team plays with more organization than these guys....

Regardless of what these boys decide Kellogg HAS to go. If they can convince this class to hang on for another year - Umass will be solid and recover quickly - if they all decide to bolt (and I cannot blame any one of them if they do) we will be a doormat in the A-10 for at least 3 more years.

Knobby, I feel your pain. I don't usually like to comment in another team's thread but if those are the kind of guys he was getting (read: instant gratification offensive-minded street ballers) maybe you're better off without them as well as Kellogg. I don't think that approach will ever build a solid college BB program. Not talking flash in the pan, here today, gone tomorrow - I mean solid year in and out.

Phew, I guess I'm lucky I never got fully sucked back in, so it's easy to let it go. I can't even get worked up about it. Wake me when Derek Kellogg is selling Ford Trucks over in Northampton and it's safe to watch UMass BB again. Out.

Last night's game was the most relaxed I've ever been watching a UMass game. I didn't really care if they won or lost, even if they had won it wouldn't have changed anything. Derek Kellogg cannot be allowed to coach at UMass for another season.

Implying that he's coaching there currently and was coaching there in previous seasons.

How about "Derek Kellogg cannot be allowed to stand helplessly along the sidelines of a UMass basketball game for another season."

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

IDK, A good chunk of the first half was terrible and the second half was most good. Don't know what is up with Deeky, but Brison, Pipkins, and even transfer Zach Lewis all seem to be playing fine. Pipkins is prone to three pointers. Flowers plays like a A10 big man, slow to develop their first years. Holding off on Chris Baldwin, as he doe not seem to get enough minutes to develop a flow. Donte takes vacations on defense, but god bless Rasaan Hollowary. He has done his work loosing wieght and a wonderful spirit. He was cheering the team and getting the crowd into it. CJ is steady. The second half seemed encouraging to the casual fans and was a very entertain second half. But yes, DK seat is getting warm. We better start winning.

It is way too early to make any predictions, but Holloway has lost a considerable amount of weight so far and that is not good for the rest of the league. Regardless of what Umass' record ends up being, a fit Holloway logging 20-30 minuter per game is a load for the other centers in the league to handle.

The clearing house has not been kind to Umass recently, and all the new guys need to still officially qualify by their standards, but it looks promising so far????

I am definitely not on the DK train, but let's be honest I and any others who think he has woefully underwhelmed at his job can have their minds changed instantly if this team performs well while he is still here.
Post this as saw it while floating over the thread. Guess DK better start winning. We can still be conference spoilers. I'm not a good man as would not mind beating URI and put them out of the big dance. It's not personal URI, is just the UMass fan in me (-:

Re: 2016-17 UMass Minutemen

It's sad. I can't even get up for tomorrow's LaSalle game. There was a time when you were guaranteed entertainment courtesy of ExplorerSteve and his alter egos "Chinkster" and "Pudding Head" as they raged against the Refs who lived to screw the Explorers on the bestest Web Site in the Galaxy.

Now? I got nuthin'. Is that Dentist still coaching them?
