Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

Well, there's always concern he'll leave.

This is just my opinion on Archie but I think "most" Dayton fans would be in agreement.

The school has structured a contract that favors both Archie and the school. Now that it has been reported (much to what your fanbase down south ever wanted to admit) Archie is making 2+ million a year. So, any school that wants Archie is going to have to go above that amount AND pay his buyout. That really really limits the schools that can do that and Dayton set it up that way on purpose.

That doesn't mean an Ohio State won't come calling and they could certainly back the Brink's truck up and pay the buyout + salary. It also means that Archie probably isn't leaving for a mid pack P5 school either.

What does this mean? I have no idea....lol. Archie could be here for another 10+ years (unlikely) but he's probably going to be very very selective in where he goes. Read interviews with John Miller; he's on record saying he felt it was a big mistake for Sean to leave X and go to Arizona (at the time) for various reasons he gives in the articles. You'll never see Archie leave for an Alabama, Ga Tech, Tennessee, ect unless the wheels come at Dayton and he has no other option (see Gregory). I don't see the wheels coming off.

Watch in off season for:

Ohio State
NC State
Indiana

Those 3 are HUGE threats (always) to take Archie.

I always felt pretty confident that Archie was going to be here through the 16-17 season (this season). Why? In interviews, he praises this senior class. I didn't see him ever abandoning them in their junior or senior year. Archie can accomplish two "records" with this class: one, the all time winningest class in Dayton history and two, make 4 straight NCAA tourny with them and this (on paper) is his best team to date. After this year, simply have to watch for what jobs open. If it's the likes of only mid pack P5 schools, I'm not worried, but if a blue blood opens and he made the NCAA this season, he very likely could be gone while the window is open.

Dayton 27 in AP poll. Would love an early shot at UCLA and of course the match up very early in the season with St. Mary's looms large.

Great article on K. Pollard and the senior class.

“He wasn’t the most highly-decorated player,” Ostrom said. “He may not even have been the second- or third-best player. But you saw it senior year when Jabari got hurt, he stepped into a different role and really thrived in that role. You just saw upside, a great athleticism. He plays bigger than he is. You saw a lot of potential with him. You saw a little bit of that when he was a freshman with bits and pieces toward the end of the year he was really starting to come on. His sophomore year he just completely took off.”

Pollard and Davis fit into the same mold. The Dayton coaches liked them because of their winning spirit, attitudes and toughness. That’s what they continue to bring as seniors.

Here's the link to the story on Dayton's win over Findlay last night (with highlights).

Few observations; first the good and there isn't much of that but the transfer wire has been very good to Dayton since Archie got established here. First Jordan Sibert, then Charles Cooke and now Josh Cunningham.

Both Cooke and Charles, along with Scoochie, carried Dayton last night. I think it was in the same order 19, 18 and 16 points put in by these 3 players. Cunningham is a much welcomed addition and you can see why this guy was a 4 star recruit out of Chicago.

The bad, just about everyone else at least for this one night. Crosby did look much more under control and can probably give Dayton better minutes backing up Scoochie then what he did last year and will take over as the starter next year. X. Williams was non existent. Mikesell was ok at best and Sam Miller showed some really good signs at times and at other times looked atrocious out there.

FT shooting was awful. Awful.

I think Dayton was down by 16 maybe even 18 points in the first half and then slowly chipped away and their "talent" took over and they eeeked it out. Move on. Real stuff next week vs. Austin Peay.

"Let's Go Peay"!!!!

Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-bas...leg-injury-win

This is just the latest challenge for a Dayton team that's dealt with its share of issues in recent months. Kendall Pollard, who averaged 10.3 PPG last season, has not played during the regular season due to a thigh bruise.

In May, center Steve McElvene collapsed and died as the result of a previously undiagnosed cardiac issue.

From ESPN's Winners and Losers from Tuesday's 24-hour Tip-Off Marathon:

Loser: Dayton (even though it won):

While Dayton secured an impressive 77-72 road victory at Alabama on Tuesday afternoon, the Flyers probably would sacrifice the win if it meant that Josh Cunningham was OK. The 6-foot-7 forward suffered a potentially serious injury in the final seconds on a game-clinching dunk. With the Flyers leading Alabama by two, Cunningham went up for a transition dunk, absorbed heavy contact from Alabama’s Ar’Mond Davis and threw down a soaring one-handed slam. Cunningham’s left leg folded underneath him awkwardly when he landed, leaving him writhing in pain on the floor clutching his lower left leg. Archie Miller said after the game that the Flyers were concerned about both Cunningham’s left knee and ankle. “It’s uncertain what it is exactly, but we could be looking at being without him for some time,” Miller added.

Dayton area fans, I saw that D Davis only got 4 minutes of playing time Tuesday. Was he ill, in the doghouse etc.?

He entered the game in the first half in a huge line change, and came out shortly thereafter when he blew a fast break lay-in where he may have slipped on the court when he jumped from 2/3rds back in the key. It was awful to watch. He didn't seem hurt, but he also blew a dunk in the previous home game, so maybe the doghouse is the answer. He then played 2 mop up minutes at the end of the game.

Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

There is some optimism that Josh Cunningham could possibly return this season. He has been using an alter g unweighted treadmill

Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

Your link is broke JAF but ya, sounds like Cunningham is maybe a week or so ahead of schedule which could be good news for us late in the season.

Also, not that I like Dickie V, but he mentions Dayton in his article this week:

http://www.espn.com/espn/dickvitale/...r-strong-start

"How about a salute to Dayton coach Archie Miller? His Flyers won a pair of games last week, beating Rhode Island and winning at St. Bonaventure. What was really impressive was Dayton's accomplishment despite the absence of leading scorer Charles Cooke, who was sidelined with wrist and tailbone injuries. The Flyers look like the team to beat in the Atlantic 10, though VCU may argue that point."
