NCAA 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

I waited way longer this year than last to create this thread but here goes:

ROSTER

http://daytonflyers.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball

This is probably the best Dayton fans have felt about a team in quite some time. Aside from the loss of Big Steve, Dayton FINALLY starts 4 seniors and adds depth to boot with very few "new" players on the scene that need to make an impact.

Cooke, Smith, Pollard and K. Davis will lead the way as usual and then throw in 4 star Josh Cunningham and we look great on paper. Cunningham probably becomes the best rebounder on the team right off the bat and was the best player on the Spain trip averaging a double double in the two games.

Trey Landers and Kostas Antetokounmpou are the two freshman joining the class. Might be hard for Landers to see minutes this year with a ton of guards in front of him. Kostas will see time mainly for his ability to block shots and clean the glass rather than for his offense which looks to be pretty raw right now. At 6-10 he's more of that new style stretch 4 than a 5.

The key to this team though will be the sophomore class. IF any of them, even one, hopefully two, make that Kendall Pollard type leap from their first to second year then this team can be great, not just really good. If I have to pick, I'll take X. Williams as that guy (we will visit this again in 6 months). None of the freshman last year looked very good (at times yes) but overall nothing to get real excited about.

Dayton starts off Oct 22 I believe with the annual Red/Blue game then follows up a week or two later with Findlay in an exhibition game.

Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

Dayton has a game with Northwestern as part of a double header at the United Center.

Dayton is in the first game which will be televised on the Big Ten Network. Date is December 17 and the second game is Illinois vs. BYU. Great pick up for Dayton and rewards Pollard, K. Davis and Cunningham who are all from Chicago.

Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

Flyer fans and A-10 fans who want to see Dayton be successful in OOC games have in my opinion, some legitimate concerns. Big Steve will definitely be missed. Will his passing affect them emotionally or will they rally around winning for #5 ? Pollard is coming shoulder problems and knee surgery. Will he be limited as he was last year or will the explosiveness he showed as junior return? Cunningham is coming off a year of inactivity and two surgeries. Reportedly he played well in Spain, but you have to hope his prior physical issues are not chronic ones. I agree its important for some of the second year players to take a bid step forward. Individually, they had their moments, but they had a long way to go.

I did not hear much about Flyers in Spain. How did they do? I hope they helped the A10 with OOC RPI strength.

Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

As of today, we have the #1 SOS in America...

Anyway; here are a few updates from the trip:

Dayton played 2 games against "pro" teams over there....take that for what it's worth lol.

http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/...sh-pros/nsB6F/

The Flyers lost 64-58. Sophomore forward Josh Cunningham, a transfer from Bradley, scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Flyers. This was his first game with UD. He sat out last season as a transfer and couldn’t practice because of offseason surgeries.
“We didn’t come out with the victory, so it wasn’t as fun as it could have been,” Cunningham said on Dayton’s Snapchat account, “but it was fun to be back on the court.”

Charles Cooke and Scoochie Smith each scored 10. Xeyrius Williams had seven rebounds. Ryan Mikesell had six points, five rebounds and five assists.
The game was played with European rules. There was a deeper 3-point line (22 feet, 1.7 inches compared to 20-0 in college) and a 24-second shot clock instead of the NCAA 30-second clock. The teams played four quarters instead of two halves.
Dayton made 2 of 16 3-pointers. It shot 41.2 percent from the field. It was 10 of 19 from the free-throw line.

http://daytonflyers.com/news/2016/8/...ars-83-73.aspx

Five Flyers scored in double figures, led officially by Josh Cunningham's 16 points (see clarification below).
(Note: A courtside computer problem wreaked havoc with the stats in the game. It is estimated that Cunningham had 19 points and 10 rebounds in at least 22 minutes of action. It is also worth noting that freshman Trey Landers played in the game, but his name does not appear in the box score.)
Scoochie Smith had 15 points, Charles Cooke 14, Sam Miller 13 and Ryan Mikesell added 10.
UD also made 22 of 27 free throws.
Dayton trailed 24 -17 after one quarter, but took the lead for good in the second on the strength of a nine second-period points by Sam Miller. The Flyers led 34-30 at the break.
UD pushed the margin to six, 57-51 after three quarters and led by at least four the rest of the way. The Flyers made nine of their last 10 free throws.
Barcelona was led by Spanish star and 2015 Prince Cup MVP Xavi Forcado, who had 20 points.
The game was played at Palau Municipal d'Esports de Badalona, the same arena the Dream Team won gold at the 1992 Olympics.

Kostas did not make the trip. He was in Greece playing for the U-19 team I believe.

We are on the bubble at 1-1.

Oh, they are still there?
VCU fans did not get that kind of information. No box scores. No highlights. Only minor updates on the trip. Some summaries of the games but not much.

Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

Can't wait for this season to start! It will be interesting to see whether the Flyers can make it four trips in a row to the NCAA Tournament.

While the starting five will probably be the four seniors, Kendall Pollard, Charles Cooke, Kyle Davis and Scoochie Smith together with sophomore Bradley transfer, Josh Cunningham there is a supporting cast who gained much experience last season.

Steve McElvene will not be forgotten and any success that the Flyers have will be because of his memory. I'm sure that even though he will be physically gone his spirit will continue to be with them.

Obviously one of the biggest stories for this season (for Dayton at least) was the passing of Big Steve:

Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

The players have elected tri-captains for the upcoming season: Scoochie Smith, Kyle Davis and Josh Cunningham. Seniors, Kendall Pollard and Charles Cooke were not selected. I wonder if Cooke's omission was due to his alleged liaison last season with Smith's girlfriend. Cunningham is an interesting choice as he has not played one minute yet for the Flyers. It maybe that they're thinking about leadership for the following season when the four seniors are gone.

Great news for Dayton:

Archie said Kendall Pollard has had two full-go practices. Best he's felt about his health status all year. @DaytonMBB

Re: 2016-2017 Dayton Flyers

'75, serious question for you regarding Archie.

I know Dayton has increased his salary to P5 levels, but is there any concern that he might leave shortly, absent a return to a good NCAA finish?

My thought is that despite the money, coaches often look for a larger stage where recruiting might be easier, bigger national exposure, etc.

For background, I looked at the A10 coaches who have had NCAA success since 2000, and their NCAA W/L's in years following a S16 year.

Mooney(2011) and Dr G(2013) with S16's, but no wins afterwards. Probably stuck as they have been with the schools over 10 years)

Martelli E8 in 2004, 2 losses and 1 win since. Too old to move
McKillop E8 in 2008, 3 losses since. Too old to move

Larranaga F4 in 2006, 1 win and 1 loss...gone 5 years after to Miami
Smart F4 in 2011, 2 wins and 2 losses...gone 4 years after to Texas

Miller E8 in 2014; first 4 and 1 win, 1 loss.

This could easily be a year he could return to good tournament success. But like Shaka, there's a window of opportunity to move if one does want to do so, that gets more difficult without repeated NCAA success.

What do you think?
