I have to work late this evening so that will be perfect because who in their right mind wants to give their full attention to work? Oh, well I get a four day weekend for Lee/Jackson Day on Friday and Martin Luther King Day on Monday so I will be survive.

I like to mention it because it will go away down the road I am sure. It used to be celebrated as Lee/Jackson/King Day. For obvious reasons the holiday was split and the state kept them both as holidays. Friday for the Generals and Monday for MLK. I plan to take a nice leisurely drive to Charlotte for the VCU/DC game on Saturday and then swing by Greensboro for my son's travel swim meet. That and sleep a lot.

Oh, back to Mason vs St Joe's. This looks like a good game and Hagan's duct work will have a profound impact on the arc of 3 point shots.

Re: Tuesday 1/10 Game

The two high schools I grew up next to are named Stonewall Jackson and Battlefield. Down the road are Washington and Lee High, and JEB Stuart. Granted the history of the civil war is very much intertwined with our geography. I live near the battlefields of 1st and 2nd Bull Run, and often go running across Henry Hill where Jackson got his nickname.

Anyway, this isn't a must win as I don't see Mason challenging for the A10 title, but going 2-2 to start would be nice. Our schedule provides some opportunities coming up. We're 4 point dogs right now. But I'm probably going to take that bet, expecting it to be a one possession game. We shall see. Need Grayer to play like he's been playing, and Otis to get out of his slump.

Edit - you can actually see the monument of SJ on the right of this photo from one of my morning runs:

Are there any other districts named after traitors who conspired against the American government and killed its citizens? Timothy McVeigh High School, maybe?

Haha maybe. Technically all our founding fathers were traitors, albeit victorious traitors. Which I guess makes them heroes.

While I digress, I simply like history, and enjoy how much of it is in Virginia. From the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, there really are a lot of great places to visit. There's a certain humility I feel when I walk through the fields where thousands died for their various causes. I don't agree or disagree with either side, just enjoy the perspective it provides.

And yeah - I hope Mason wins.

I won't apologize for the treatment of Native Americans, but those actions were not carried out AGAINST the American government. My original post was tongue-in-cheek, by the way. I love Civil War history and get to battlefields when I can.

If you're talking about down the road in Arlington, that would be Washington-Lee, not Washington and Lee, though people do refer to it as "W&L" when abbreviating. If you're talking about the one in the Northern Neck, that's quite some ways down the road.

As to how Thomas Jackson got his nickname, you probably know that there is more than a little doubt that Bee meant it as a compliment. Some who were there maintained he was pissed because Jackson remained where he was, standing there like a "stonewall", instead of coming to his aid.

I enjoy history, too.

Continuing your digression, I ran into Taylor Reveley, the W&M president, when I was dropping my son off at college back in 2015. He's another guy who enjoys Virginia history. He was going on about the War of Northern Agression (not his words, but I was getting that vibe) and how there had been an engagement at Williamsburg in 1862. I told him that I knew that and in fact that my great-grandfather (who my son is named after) had fought in that campaign. President Reveley seemed quite interested until I mentioned that my great-grandfather's unit was the 11th Maine. He paused for a moment and then said, "Oh, those guys." He wasn't referring directly to the 11th Maine, of course, he meant all the boys wearing blue, woolen uniforms. He remained polite but that seemed to end our short conversation.

Wait Lee Jackson King wasn't one person? I've been celebrating wrong...
