Re: Coaching Carousel

Does UMass make money playing football? If not, is their desire to be relevant in football costing them in basketball? What is the upside in football? From an outsiders perspective, it seems like the upside is what UConn is today, which is pretty darn crappy since the Big East folded into two conferences. I'm sure there are benefits to the school outside of the direct money that football generates/costs but it just seems like there are a bunch of resources I can only assume are going towards football that could have been thrown towards basketball and other sports.

Perhaps I'm wrong, perhaps there are big donors, perhaps basketball is getting as much support as they always have, but if I was a head coaching being asked to interview that would be one of the first things I'd want to investigate, ask about. I'd want to be real darn sure I'm comfortable w/ their long term goals for the entire athletic department.

At the same time, I wonder if we over-estimate what UMass hoops is or should be. For those of my age and older, we clearly remember the dominance in the Calipari era, but take those years away, and the program isn't all that much different than what Bona has historically been. Bona was significantly better in the 60s/70s and now that the downfall from the weldergate era is behind them, they've had similar success over the last 6 years or so. Perhaps Calapari has shown us that the upside at Umass is significantly higher than Bona, but neither Flint, nor Lappas, nor Ford nor Kellogg have been all that much better or worse than Bona was under Barron nor Schmidt. As a fan of the A10 I keep hoping that they are just on the cusp of reaching that power that Calapri unleashed, but its been 20 years.

Re: Coaching Carousel

On the contrary - Basketball has received more financial support in the last 5 years than since they built the arena 25 years ago. The salary is still average by top tier D1 standards, but damn good for a mid major.

As far as setting the bar, you may ultimately be right - maybe Umass is never going to be "relevant" again, however they have the infrastructure in place to do so. We just need a competent coach who can deliver reasonable results. Then we will know for sure. 20 win seasons and 4 or 5 out of 10 years in the NCAA tourney should maintain 80% or more attendance which would be respectable and reasonable.

NC State after Will Wade? From the Charlotte Observer.

As a side note- "Archie Miller puts his players in a position to win". Will Wade " puts his players in a position to use their strengths".

Have a go at it. What does the coach of your program do with his players?

"Mooney puts his players on the court, sometimes too many players."

Bill, I haven't heard "sniff your own farts" in 43 years.

NC State's firing of its coach and making the announcement half through the season, and then openly recruiting other school's coaches through the media is a new low for P5 schools that can't compete in the their own leagues despite having the best TV and revenues sources. And on top of everything thing else they have the NCAA establishment in their back pockets. If this bullshit works for NC State, every half assed P5 school will be doing the same.

I hate these cock suckers.
Bill Russell, res and Goop like this.

That newspaper the Charlotte-Observer sent a report to the VCU/SLU game and sent one to the UD game at Davidson. Both reporters wrote stories about how Miller and Wade would be a good fit. I find it odd that the newspaper is acting as a search committee.

I find it disgusting ... not odd. NC State could put a stop to this, but I suspect that are on-board.

I would be surprised if Archie leaves Dayton for NC State. I hope that Will doesn't take the bait.

NC State is a tough gig but the rewards for success are huge. I susect Wade or Miller would probably take the job if offered.

My money is on Miller to Indiana - if they dump Crean which is looking like 50/50 right now.

Wouldn't Mack and Cronin both get strong consideration for the IU job? You could argue Cronin's done more with less than either Mack or Miller.

The hot name now is Holtmann from Butler. He is mentioned in the same breath as Miller now. Would make sense at Indiana.

If that did happen it would be tough on VCU especially on the heels of Smart leaving. Wade had to scramble to fill the class that bailed. He picked up Hamdy and Doughty which was huge. Now, he had a very good class coming in next season. If he did jump at a job that class could bail. Major holes can only be plugged so often. VCU has been very good at hiring coaches from Capel to Grant to Smart to Wade in the last 12 years but it is certainly tough on this fan when it happens.

They are also mentioned with Louisville - more as a hypothetical since Pitino isn't sitting on a hot seat. It will be interesting to see if Mack tests the water this year.
