Coaching Carousel

There are a few paragraphs about A10 Coaches. The very last sentence of the Jim Ferry paragraph will incite the Olean Boy's

Re: Coaching Carousel

Shouldn't that be Olean Boy's?

Thamel won't incite me. I agree, I would certainly not want to take on an impossible job where I wouldn't stand a chance of finishing in the top half of the league, let alone win a conference tournament or regular season (co-) championship, particularly for a measly 800,000 +. You'd have to be crazy.

Par for the course. I don't read a thing from modern sports "journalists" anymore. It's monkey see, monkey do. Rinse, repeat.

Does Thamel know Fordham is in the A-10? I must admit I love the article.

If I'm not mistaken SI is affiliated with CNN somehow, so why let a few facts get in the way of half ass attempt at cleverness.

Re: Coaching Carousel

Need to finish strong in the last 4 games and a run in the A10 tournament.

We just lost to G'dub.
Quote:
UMass: The Minutemen have sputtered to a 3–11 Atlantic 10 record, and coach Derek Kellogg needs a strong four-game closing stretch and a run in the Atlantic 10 tournament to salvage his job. Kellogg is a beloved alumnus and former start point guard, but he’s reached just one NCAA tournament in his nine seasons in Amherst. He’s facing a crucial three weeks, as UMass has flashed enough talent to beat Dayton but also lost by 30 to last-place Duquesne. There’s a young roster that needs to show life and competitiveness for Kellogg to stick around and coach them next year. (Just imagine Calipari’s rant if Kellogg is fired.) Expectations have risen in Amherst with a newly opened $22 million practice facility. Vermont’s John Becker would be a strong name here, as he’s won 20 games in all six of his seasons there. Towson’s Pat Skerry has strong New England ties and Northeastern’s Bill Coen may be the most respected coach in New England.

Chance he’s fired: 65%
PS. Was at a Football event in Boston with President Marty Meehan, Boston Red Sox Sam Kennedy, our AD and Football coaching staff. So missed the latest lose and granted it was a Football event but no one ever mention the men's basketball team or asked about a score.

I'm not even riled up. Mainly because a comment like that shows such an incredible level of stupidity you have to wonder if the author has been under a rock for.. oh.. the last 5 years. He's probably the same kind of douchenozzle that would mention a certain "issue that shall not be mentioned" like it happened this past summer. I seriously cannot fathom how one could be so asinine and capable of breathing the same air that the rest of us do.

Now, order of scariness for A10 jobs that may be open: (1) UMass - get used to 2nd fiddle to football. (2) Duquesne - dead program in a city where college interest is on life support, family and friends of the visitors outnumber Dukes fans at the Palumbo, with all apologies to our favorite DU posters. (3) GW - have always righted the ship when things went south. If the Bonnies didn't have a de facto life contract for Schmidt, it would be maybe scarier than GW, and certainly more attractive than the other two.. today.

Typical. Not worth getting riled up about it.

Come again? I think you're off-base here.

Someday in my lifetime, Football season ticket holders will out number basketball season ticket holders. Bamford would have to hit a heII of a home run in a new BB coach for this not to happen.

Re: Coaching Carousel

I don't see UMass hoops as a scary job at all, but the football thing does scare me for the long term. It could be a disaster to go AAC in the next few years only to see some type of a 4x16 power system developing shortly thereafter. It could wind up a glorified C-USA or Sun Belt.

That said, UMass is probably the best of those three hypothetical openings. GW could make a case with its D.C. location, but UMass' arena and practice facility are really good. Duquesne is the worst job in the conference... by a lot.

I was startled out of a sound sleep by a dream I had.... A Umass alum was our head B-ball coach and he was really bad. It seemed like an endless reel of a bunch of players running around the floor with no game plan or structure of any kind. Umass really sucked - I woke up with this vision of the last place team in the A-10 beating the ever-lovin-shit out of us - it was very unsettling................ Wait - what - THIS REALLY HAPPENED?

I think there are factors that make the UMass job an anxiety attack waiting to happen. In terms of actual program, yeah it's probably more attractive than Duquesne. But I'm thinking of the long-term prospects, the fact that fan interest has dwindled, the university is behind football, and there's the possibility of being uprooted into a new conference. "Scary" might not be the best word, but I would say there are the most unknowns.

Re: Coaching Carousel

^ The university is behind football AND basketball. Fan interest has dwindled because Kellogg is terrible and the team has been terrible for three years in a row. As soon as they start winning again the fans will be back, as they did during UMass' three year mini-run with Chaz Williams. UMass might move to the AAC, which is probably a lateral move, but they're not going to neuter basketball with a conference move to something like the Sunbelt, they already passed up the opportunity to move all sports to the MAC and instead took football independent.
