Re: Transfers

As of early this morning, the number of transfers stands at 120. Bradley & Portland each have four. I didn't note any A-10 transfers out, but LaSalle has a guard, Traci Carter transferring in from Marquette. Trey Mourning, son of Georgetown great Alonzo is leaving the Hoya program. He had very limited minutes in ten games.

Re: Transfers

Word on the street, if it's to be believed, is that a very prominent A10 player may grad transfer to a big time school.

I'm skeptical, but it's what I'm hearing.

Stressing how this might not be true, but let's just say that he's still playing.

That would stink. I assume you mean EC Matthews, as his redshirt last year could make this possible. If I could change one NCAA rule, it might be the grad transfer rule. It is a total farce that largely benefits the P5.

I'm curious to see if anyone else has heard something to this effect.

We will always respectfully disagree here.

I may not like it when it affects my team, but for x sake. It's their lives not ours and don't give me the crap that the school invested in them. They served their time, like another commitment, whether it was the military for the GI Bill or anything else. We don't own them and they should be free to do what ever after satisfy the commitment to attend school and hopefully graduate. (APR's be damned.)

Re: Transfers

^ agree 100%. A kid who spends four years at a school does not owe them a fifth nor should they have to sit. If it benefits bigger schools that's a shame but almost everything benefits bigger schools. I look at Seth Berger at UMass. Whether DK was retained or not, I expected him to transfer. He won't transfer to a P5 team but he likely will transfer to a west coast team nearer to his family. Why shouldn't he be allowed to?

Re: Transfers

I'm not about holding anyone against his will. It's simple: if you transfer, you sit a year. If the graduate degree REALLY means that much to you (it doesn't in many cases), the extra year would be welcome, as most master's degrees require two years to complete. Let me guess, though... the big schools don't want to burn two scholarship years on most kids for only one year of play? Shocking.

Don't you have to use your 4 years of eligibility within 5 academic years?
Wouldn't your suggestion mean 6?

Perhaps that only applies to your first school.

That would be my proposal. Instead of making the waver allow a kid immediate eligibility, allow him to get a sixth year to play. Again, if academics is what this is all about, then I'm not sure who could protest such a scenario.

Also, the current rule is totally in favor of large state schools (shocker, again) in that a player's new school must offer a graduate degree that is not offered at his previous institution. Obviously, a huge university with 20+ grad programs is going to have more flexibility in such a system.

We're not at a disadvantage there, Bill. What kid wouldn't be interested in Franciscan Studies?

Does that require a trip up to Merton's Heart? I hear that land is posted now.
