Richmond will host Vermont as part of its 2017-18 non-conference schedule, per a source.

It is my understanding that Vermont will begin a three-game series with St. Bonaventure this season. Game one will be played in Rochester, NY (Anthony Lamb's hometown). From there, it will be a traditional home-and-home between Olean and Burlington.

We just fired our athletic director, which has been a long time coming for some folks. This is my favorite line: "Richmond may be interested, according to the sources, in transitioning to a basketball-centric AD, given that the Spiders flagship sport is men's basketball, the one with the most revenue-producing potential."

Says he resigned due to illness in his family.

And I'm telling you he was fired.

I look at it this way.

His significant other is ill.

He was told his contract ending 6/30 will not be renewed.

His odds of finding employment in the same field are increased if he leaves before then.

Being from a large flagship university, I'd be pissed. This is the reason Tim Kenney did not a sniff for the UMass AD slot and went to the Bonnies. Perhaps he is interested in the Spiders.

Re: 2017-2018 Richmond Spiders

This is good news for UR, as it can't afford to function as a Patriot or Ivy school, admissions-wise, for basketball players (nobody in our conference can afford to do so). Richmond is one of the A10's sleeping giants, given their vast financial resources. While the program has been very solid, it could be a consistent power if it gets its collective shit together.

Edit to add: Leave Tim Kenney right where he is, Steve!

This is exactly my hope and that of many other Spiders. I'm not going to sit here and cry academics as the reason we've sucked for 6 years as far as making the NCAAs are concerned, but it's an undeniable fact that we have had at least 3 occasions in the past 7 or 8 years in which this cost us legit players. Malcolm Bernard committed last summer as a grad transfer, then he was rejected over a few points on his final GPA, went to Xavier and started for them most of the year. Do we make the tourney with him? It's possible.

We also had a commitment from a high-level SG from Hampton (Marquis Godwin) who then missed on his test scores and had to sign with ODU instead. He will be a good one, I fear. And of course we had a commitment from JJ Avila, then he didn't get admitted, went to Colorado State for a few years and put up 18/10 type numbers for them.

At this point I don't know if Mooney is the problem, Gill was the problem or what. If Mooney gets to sign off on the new AD, that would suggest the powers that be viewed Gill as the problem. So I hope the new AD comes in wanting to do whatever it takes to win. With all the resources we have, we can't keep tying one hand behind our back whether that hand is a mediocre coach, bad recruiters, an AD who doesn't go to bat for the coach or something else.

Re: 2017-2018 Richmond Spiders

I keep waiting for some interesting Spider news. We are apparently still searching for an "identity", whatever the hell that is.

Meanwhile, no billboard porn, no arena porn, actually no porn period.

Some of the schedule is starting to be released.

Quote:
Richmond will compete in the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic, an eight-team tournament, Nov. 20-22. UR will play three games. The other participants are Cincinnati, Iowa, Wyoming, UAB, Lousiana (formerly Louisiana Lafayette), South Dakota State, and Buffalo. Opening-round pairings haven't been released.
Quote:
UR coach Chris Mooney said Wednesday evening that the Spiders' non-conference schedule also includes games at Boston College, at Wake Forest, and at Old Dominion. At home, UR will meet Vermont, Bucknell, and James Madison. UR is still in search of more games.
Mooney is still our coach. Cline is gone. And we need a grad transfer; preferably a big.

Reading your quote, I assume you did some light reading.

It was actually another article, but same words about the schedule.

Don't want our thread to fall off the front page.
Also, need to get in the porn fight:

What happened to the supposed grad transfer that UR was likely getting? Was it the Princeton kid who wound up at Iowa State?
