Re: 2017 - 2018 UMass Minutemen

We have added two players eligible for next year so far and a 3rd who has to sit out a year.

Jaylen Brantley - Senior grad transfer from Maryland. Good solid B1G point guard and a local kid from Springfield MA. He was getting about 15-18 minutes per game last year. He should be a nice calming influence to this team and seems more like a distributor than a scorer. Umass seems to have had score first point guards for a long time, and this kid will spread it around more I think.

Khalea Turner-Morris‬ - Power Forward/Center from Louisiana - committed yesterday. Nice sized kid 6'9" (in the 250lb range). He is an incoming freshman but with the extra year of prep his body seems a little more mature than the average freshman. His quote was cool [paraphrased] - he likes to bang around and do the dirty work!!! I LOVE IT!

This gives Umass 4 pretty damn big front court guys for you all to contend with.

The other commit is Curtis Cobb - transferring from Fairfield - 6-4 Shooting Guard Forward. Decent stats but no impact to this coming season.

McCall has made A LOT of offers the past couple weeks. I honestly cannot say for sure, but it seems like he has been way more active than DK ever was in that arena (in puire number of offers). Some may be the fallout from the transfers and immediate need plus the limited number of openings next year (for DK).

I was startled out of a sound sleep by a dream I had.... A Umass alum was our head B-ball coach and he was really bad. It seemed like an endless reel of a bunch of players running around the floor with no game plan or structure of any kind. Umass really sucked - I woke up with this vision of the last place team in the A-10 beating the ever-lovin-shit out of us - it was very unsettling................ Wait - what - THIS REALLY HAPPENED?

Are any of the Bona fans familiar with Dominick Welch and what can you tell me about him? I know he scored a ton of points, is about to graduate HS and was planning on taking a prep year. He just tweeted that he'll be taking an OV to UMass this weekend.

Yes. He had visited SBU, too. I'm not sure how UMass could possibly get him eligible. I know some people pretty close to the situation, and the grades aren't too close. Prep is likely a necessity.

Re: 2017 - 2018 UMass Minutemen

Perhaps he'll have to sit out a year. Time will tell, but we have a good support system and good history these students and multiple available scholarships. We've lost 7 players which is just over half the team. Coach McCall must of know about it as many posters commented the number of offers going out recently. So we'll have 5 players with experience and Unique, who was red-shirted last year. We picked up three with two being able to play so the bench stands at 8. We'll see how the next few weeks go.

These days, taking a partial qualifier and having him sit a year just means you'll probably lose him as a grad transfer down the line.

It does however shield you quite a bit from the chances of them leaving after a year or two.

Kids transfer so much these days I dont think there is anything that can shield that.

^ When transferring to another D1 program would result in the loss of a year of eligibility, yeah, that is a deterrent to transferring out for what they might perceive as greener pastures.

Oh, is that the case for partials? I did not know that.

Re: 2017 - 2018 UMass Minutemen

I would be very disappointed if Welch landed elsewhere in the A10. It was said around Buffalo all year that Dom was likely bound for SBU, and that the interest was very mutual (he has taken multiple unofficials to Bona). For whatever reason, though, Schmidt isn't crazy about taking him as a partial qualifier. At least one assistant wanted to do that. The hope on our end is that we can sign him in the fall before his prep season begins. If he pops for UMass now, it would be interesting to see how they got him into school.

Re: 2017 - 2018 UMass Minutemen

^ I could be wrong, but I think under normal circumstances once a player's college athletic clock has started, they have 5 years to complete 4 seasons. Anything beyond the 5 years requires a waiver from the NCAA. So if someone redshirts for any reason, partial/non-qualifier, development, transfer, then has to shit again to transfer, the NCAA would have to approve a waiver for a 6th year. I think they're likely to approve it if it's injury related, but other situations are less likely to get approved.

Shocking as it may be, it's possible he likes what UMass has to offer more than SBU.

You are not reading what I wrote. There is a reason that this is Dom's first official visit. A player of his caliber would have been taking officials last summer if things were clear. Grades are way, way off. I'm assuming McCall is bringing him in with the idea of taking him now as a partial qualifier. By no means am I saying he couldn't possibly like UMass more than SBU. It's just that I know enough about his situation that this is a bizarre twist. Could he be taking an official as a member of the 2018 class, or is it too early? If not, that would make sense.

Re: 2017 - 2018 UMass Minutemen

^ Oh, ok. I agree with you about his eligibility. I had someone more or less confirm what you're saying and as you mentioned I think he wouldn't be playing for a college team until 2018. Does that mean he'll be in college (sitting out) or a prep school in 2017, I don't know the answer to that.

Re: 2017 - 2018 UMass Minutemen

Does anyone know when class of 2018 kids can begin taking official visits? Welch's situation is unique because he is technically a 2017 kid, but has not yet officially enrolled in prep school. Perhaps that is why he is able to take an official now?
