2017 - 2018 UMass Minutemen

There is a new sheriff in town - Matt McCall will be calling the shots now. The drama of choice #1 aside. Our new coach looks like he is settling in nicely so far.

Last year the team was inconsistent at best, and down right terrible at worst. Odd rotations, an undefinable offense, and undisciplined situational basketball plagued the DK era.

It is too early to assess next year other than to identify who is and is not going to be here (for sure) right now:

IN:
Unique McLean - a very unknown quantity - he can dunk, we know that, but we don't know if he can shoot or defend. He will likely be a bench warmer if he can's shoot with any consistency.

Getting an obvious late jump - McCall has a few decent recruits on the radar and one or two possible transfer candidates. Nothing is set in stone yet however.

OUT:
Seth Berger - He never really found a consistent role - he played decent defense at times but that was about it. He is transferring as a 5th year senior to Oregon State

Zach Coleman - poor kid was never healthy enough to get into any kind of groove. He had the body size, but he just could not stay on the floor to remotely reach any kind of potential. Also a 5th year senior transfer - destination TBD

Zach Lewis - The transfer from Canisius was sporadically used until near the end of the season. He showed slashes, but again inconsistent.

Derek Kellogg - after 9 years of underwhelming and frustrating results he was relieved of his duties. Most thought he was safe for at least one more year if not eh remaining 2 of his contract regardless of the results this season to cultivate the best recruiting class (on paper) Umass has ever signed. While it has never been confirmed, it appears that getting obliviated by the last place Dukes was the straw that broke Ryan Bamford's back. Kellogg's teams showed a propensity for regression every year and this past season was no exception.

It is really hard to speculate what Umass could/will be next season. They could still lose Donte Clark and there are rumors of maybe one or two more leaving but nothing overly definable in either direction. If the remaining roster returns they will be very young with no seniors (who get playing time); but loads of potential. Depending on who McCall can add to the roster - especially in the area of shooting ability - Umass could become respectable very quickly. McCall has yet to officially announce his staff - so there are still far too many unanswered questions at this point.

UMASS could be the biggest surprise in the A10 next year. I'm not sure that it would be a surprise, but more along the lines of a coach properly utilizing a talented roster. Maybe it's just Dayton, or Mullins, but UMASS always looks like a tournament team against the Flyer's. Kellogg could recruit.

He also suffered from a serious case of Foot In Mouth disease with the media too....

How bored is Chris Berman after stepping away from the NFL duties on ESPN that's he's coaching football at UMass against a basketball coach.

Yeah...

Well, now we get to see what McCall can throw together with the rug pulled out from under him. Still has some legit players on the team, but it's going to be rough going for a bit.

No, no... by all means: open the floodgates and let kids transfer freely. It's horrifically bad now; without restriction, it's the Wild f'ing West.

I can't understand this from Jarreau's perspective. You're a likely four-year starter on a solid program in a top-seven conference. What do you want? Oh... you mean UMass didn't mean shit to you, and that you just followed the advice of the sharks/AAU coaches/Kellogg connections? Christ.

It's appropriate for everyone to get fresh starts. It will be an interesting year and looking forward to it.

Re: 2017 - 2018 UMass Minutemen

The transfers obviously not good for UMASS nor the A-10. I understand the grad transfer being selective and looking to play major minutes for a team likely to go to the dance, but I'm not sure that as a younger player, I would want to sit out a year especially without a guaranty that my new school wont bring in a touted recruit at my position.

Fact is that kids outside of the most elite basketball schools sign up to play for the coach not the school. I have no problem with the kids transferring although it sucks.
