whats up with shavlik randolph?
turned on duke saturday and tuesday expecting to see big things out of this prize recruit and left wondering what is going on with randolph and the dookies.now i can see if dunleavy and boozer were still there his time on the court may be limited but playing behind nick horvath?against ucla shav was at a disadvantage trying to guard smaller players on the perimiter but by the second half ucla had come with some bigger frontcourt guys and i was a little surprised he wasnt in more.the osu game just puzzled me completely.2 points in 7 minutes?someone questioned his defense.can you determine anything in 7 minutes?randolph is your basic skilled finesse player like a keith van horn or many of the european players that come to the nba.if you are looking for a floor burn guy i think he doesnt come across as that.my take is coach k is trying to get all the guys to play hard.what better way than to use one of your prize recruits as a scapegoat to get everyones attention.to me this seems very similar to the chris burgess situation(although burgess wasnt as talented),we'll see.look for randolph's stay at duke to be short and not so sweet.

That is absolutely absurd. He's played limited minutes in two games, and you are predicting him to transfer?
When Coach K recruited every single player on this team, he told them each the same thing: they would have to earn their playing time. Coach K isn't the type of guy that's going to play someone just because they are a "prize recruit". He's going to play the guy who's playing the best and working hard. Against UCLA, Horvath and Sanders DESERVED to be on the court.
Right now, Shavlik is not what Duke needs in the post. Duke has such an explosive backcourt, all they really need out of their post players is rebounding, solid defense, and an occasional layup or dunk. Randolph is really overmatched physically and a major defensive liability. Almost everything Duke does on offense is a result of their defense, so post defense can't be stressed enough.
You must also forget that Chris Burgess was probably even more of a prize recruit than Randolph. Brand and Battier were big time recruits, but Burgess was the prize of the class. However, Brand and Battier worked for their playing time and deserved it; Burgess didn't deserve it. He left because his father wanted to blame Coach K because his son didn't live up to the hype. But just because he gave up and left doesn't mean Randolph will.
Randolph will be a star in the ACC, it just may take a little longer than some people expected. Right now, Horvath and Sanders deserve to start and deserve to get most of the minutes.

who said anything about transferring?.i figure he will just go to the nba.here's the problem i have.whatever he was doing in the preseason and in the first two games was good enough for the coaching staff that they made him a starter.then against ucla, as i mentioned, he was asked to guard some 6-5 guard on the perimiter,he didnt do that well as we know.based on that he is supposedly a bad defender and not "earning his minutes".then in the osu game he plays 7 minutes total.you are trying to tell me that the answer is casey sanders and nick horvath?be serious.now randolph may be the biggest bust of all time for all i know but dont spew the company line that other guys deserve to be in there based on 2 games where the kid palyed about 15 minutes total.

When you said his stay may be short, I thought you meant he would transfer. He will not go pro because he wouldn't get drafted, at least for a couple of years.
Yes, Randolph does score. But he is an absolute liability on the defensive end, whether or not he's playing someone 6'5". I'm not saying he should get only 8 minutes a game, but I don't think he should get a substantial amount of minutes more than Sanders or Horvath.
Another thing is that Randolph isn't great in the transition game, where Sanders excels.

What are you talking about one of the best ever out of North Carolina? He dropped out of the top ten on just about everyone's top recruit lists, and slipped out of the top 15 on most.
No, there's no way he'd get drafted right now. He is WAY too small. He's not even physically mature enough to excel at Duke, let alone the NBA...and he's not athletic AT ALL. There is NO WAY he'd get drafted after this year.

I actually have to agree with The Truth. I seen a couple of DUKE games this season, and after this season to get drafted, well, I do not see it. After Soph year? Well, he needs to play this season, and improve drastically this year. Just wondering, are you comparing SR with magette that he left after one year only being the 6th man? If that is true, well Magette was well "more ready" for the NBA than SR.

you guys may be right but i'll keep the argument going.first of all magette still isnt ready for the nba, second randolph may have dropped out of some top 10 lists but on many others he didnt.i think his dropoff had a lot to do with injuries he had during the summer before his sr year.you may be right about not getting drafted but if you look at some of the stiffs that get drafted from year to year i find it hard to believe some team wouldnt take a chance on this guy.we'll see.

Hey, I don't want you to get the wrong idea. I want Shavlik to be a superstar. I hope he eventually does get drafted high. I just don't think anybody would take him after this year, and I think that his limited minutes are justified.
However, 7 minutes a game is not right for Randolph. I definitely think he'll play some more in the next few games, especially tomorrow against Michigan.
