Gary Williams Q&A: Aiming for ACC title next season

They got a few wins down the stretch and ended up in the Tournament. There's been talk that Williams could be close to the end of his stay at Maryland. What do the Terps have to do this year for Williams not to be fired?

They have to win the ACC championship or the conference for him to not get axed

They might as well fire him now then. Williams is a good coach, but for whatever reason he just can't get big name stars to go there anymore. They do return much of their team, but even at that I find it hard to believe they'll be any better than 5th in conference when all is said and done. Much of the ACC is filled with more talent than they have.

Thing is that has saved Williams is fund raising.He's apparently very good at it.You can lose games and keep your job.You can't lose the boosters and keep your jobs.Most coaches get fired because those people stop writing checks.As bad as it looks from the outside there really doesn't seem like there is a huge amount of pressure on Williams from the guys who really count.

To the contrary it seems that those people love Williams and hate the Athletics Department.If they decide to move him he could actually end up the AD.On the other hand it seems that Debbie Yow would like to drop the axe,but her job is more in jeopardy than his.

Underdog Status No Longer Applies

I want to know how incredible this guy's teams could be if he got had more than 1 big name player on his team.

On pure coaching ability he is still an elite coach, but he just has not recruited that well. Think of all the talent he has missed out on from the DC area (Beasley, Lawson, Durant, Nolan Smith, etc.) that's talent he could have done major things with.
