I have been honest. I'm going to find my 'staff handbook' today and check up on the standard.

No previous discipline, I was actually one of the golden boys that they wanted to become one of the strategic leaders for the future.

I punched him at 2am outside a club, so most definitely off the clock. The evening was not organised by work, however people from work were present.

No criminal charges.

I really don't want the 'investigation' or 'termination' to follow me. There really doesn't seem to be a whole lot of help available on the internet.

^ This is exactly what I am trying to ascertain from the company handbook and my contract. I wish I had access to precendent, I doubt this is the first time such an incident has occurred in a business that has over +10,000 employees.

I'd request an alternative of submitting a letter of resignation and 2 weeks to find another job. Then tell my direct boss an thank him/her for everything (fake examples of learning yada yada) and then send a company wide email thanking everyone and future contact information.

However, I don't think that this will happen. I think that you'll be put on probation and it will screw up your promotion/bonus this year.

This is exactly where I am at right now. It's encouraging to know I am thinking along the right lines.

The company handbook's explicit mention of violence as gross misconduct says on 'company premises' or 'company business' neither of which are applicable in this case. They have another section for 'out of work' offences that could mean dismissal, but again, nothing is a match for what I did.

I think I will argue my case and then ask what the likely outcome is, if it does not look good, I'll offer my resignation.
