How do I get past the 'so why did you leave your last job' question without saying I was let go?

I've tried different avenues like 'it came to an end', 'it was terminated', etc, but they always press and say 'why?'.

I've got a phone interview with the director of a company at some point today, to see if I get progressed through to face to face interview early next week with another director. If I can get that face to face interview, I know I can get the job.
