the biggest disaster in intercollegiate sports??
during a press conference, the big east commissioner said that if miami, bc, and syracuse jumped ship to the acc it would be the biggest disaster in intercollegiate sports. huh??
this guy should listen to himself. he then went on to blast teams that were even considering leaving because it showed a lack of loyalty toward the big east.
this is my take on it. there are 327 college basketball teams and 117 football teams. you have to be extremely aggressive and (for lack of a better word) selfish to go places. teams move conferences all of the time. granted it usually doesn't happen with the big six, but it constantly happens. if you have a chance to put your program in a better position than it is currently in, you should jump. you don't owe anything to someone who sits in a league office.
this isn't a travesty or a degridation by any stretch of the imagination. in fact, after the transition of conferences occurs, no one will care. the big east could simply pick up three other teams (louisville, cincinnati, marshall) and continue with eight football teams and 14 basketball teams just as they are now. granted it isn't as impressive of a lineup, but with the acception of miami, none of the three teams has finished in the rankings for the past two seasons in football.
also, the big east is a fairly new conference and when it was formed virginia tech, miami, and several others came from other conferences. kind of an oxymoron to call it a travesty in my mind.
