why i would NEVER make it as an nba ref
well, this is my 1st one so it might be a bit rambling and unfocused but, here goes.....
the basics- i would never give superstar calls.
i would be a stickler for the rules. i wouldn't bend or break them for anybody anytime. i really mean that.
this would seriously screw things up. in earlier times, guys like jordan and his then coach phil jackson would HATE my guts. jordan would not like the fact that i wouldn't give him the b.s. calls he got over his career. i cringe at so many of the games i saw him play scoring so many points on completely undeserved trips to the line. he was probably the greatest ever but he was in my oppinion, the most protected player ever too.
i would actually have called charges on the guy which was something that only happened once every blue moon back in the day.
the same goes for todays current stars too. i remember back around the lakers 3peat title run against sacramento and bibby was guarding kobe, byrant made a pretty little crossover and rained in a 12-15 footer that bibby had the audacity to challenge and clearly DIDN'T EVEN TOUCH HIM yet, because he made it look so smooth and pretty (not to mention the game was in l.a.) the refs called a foul and the great kobe got himself a 3point play.
i remember in the 04 olympic games and lebron kept getting this startled look of disbelief when he kept getting called for traveling. i mean he was already a legend in the nba (already king james) he just couldn't believe these guys were doing this to HIM. i mean didn't they know who he was- you don't call him for that stuff- you just don't.
the way the games are called is so subjective. if mr. no name journeyman makes a drive to the hoop and gets bumped- he may get a call. if guys like kobe, lebron or the guy who i believe has learned how to milk it as good as anyone since jordan- iverson do it, well it's an automatic trip to the line. and they expect it too. that kind of crap would NOT happen on my watch.
the way rookies are treated would actually get better (for them). no more of the whole you pay your dues first in order to get fair calls. you get them from the start to finish. no more calling fouls because you anticipate one is going to happen.
i simply wouldn't make the most preferential call to the guys because they bring in the most money which for mr. stern is the be-all end-all of everything. the integrity of the game has been seriously comprimised since jordan and crew did their title runs. the money the league was bringing in was huge and the poularity was huge too. the owners and stern were really loving this cash flow and it started to turn the game from a sport to something more like pro wrestling. and this is where it remains.
well, i'm getting a little tired now. i might write more later.
