Contender or Pretender?
Let's just take a quick look at some teams that look like they're for real, and ones that look like they're not.
Contender - Georgetown: I have to admit, I wasn't sure what to expect out of the Hoyas heading into the season after losing Wallace, Hibbert, among others. But after watching them in the Old Spice Classic this weekend, this is a team that's going to give a lot of teams fits. Sure, Tennessee was able to sneak by them, and they looked off at times against Wichita St. However, they absolutely destroyed Maryland and I learned that Georgetown is going to do what they always do: Beat you with defense and backdoors. It might not always be the prettiest basketball, but it gets the job done.
Pretender - Wisconsin: They don't seem to be playing as good defensively this year as we've seen in the past from them. The Badgers don't seem to have much depth, and the starters they do have aren't that good. That led to a beating by UConn, and some wins over Long Beach St. and Iona that could have just as easily gone the other way. They will still probably make the NCAA Tourney, but they'll likely have a couple of losses down the road that will be head scratchers.
Contender - Washington St.: Despite getting beat by double digits to Pittsburgh over the weekend, this team is going to make the NCAA Tournament, something I said before the season started that most didn't give them a chance to do. They've crushed everyone else they've played and that's not an easy task when you play as slow as they do. Dick Bennett doesn't need a ton of talent to succeed because he's such a great coach. He's going to maximize the talent he does have with superb defense.
Pretender - Louisville: I didn't think I would be saying this, but when you lose at home to a team that lost its top 3 minute getters from a year ago by double digits, things don't seem very promising. Sure, Louisville was able to turn things around last year, but I'm not so sure it's going to happen now. Samuels is their only consistent weapon on offense, and after all, he is only a freshman.
